5 Questions With, Cassandra Pollard, Quality Control Associate II, Charles River Laboratories
Cassandra Pollard is an alumni of the UMBC translational life science technologies program and a member of our BioHealth Capital Region Board of Buzz. Throughout her academic career, she’s been fascinated with biotechnology and the great advancements it has achieved throughout the years.

1. What did you want to be when you grow up? How’d you get from there to here?
I always knew I wanted to get into the field of science. I originally thought I wanted to be in animal science because I grew up around animals and I love them a lot. My grandfather passed away from an illness during my middle school years and it made me want to go more into an area that can help treat and prevent illnesses. I found the field of Biotechnology midway through my academic career, and I automatically fell in love with it. Currently, I am in Quality Control at Charles River Laboratories, and it feels good knowing that my job helps to make sure the products we produce to treat people are safe.
2. How are you helping to build a more connected community?
BioBuzz’s mission is simple: to be more connected. Our regionally-focused storytelling, programs, events and experiences create, connect and amplify impact across the life science workforce in growing biohubs. We vibe with people who value community and connection like us. We’d love for you to share how you’re building a more connected community… and any support that you need from our community to continue to accomplish this mission.
I have been starting small, promoting connection at my company’s site by encouraging our employees to talk and network with each other. I have also participated in non-formal talks with the student body at Montgomery College to introduce them to the Biotech field, and of course BioBuzz. BioBuzz has been a great avenue to introduce and shed some rust off people’s networking skills. I have conducted a presentation on networking at my site, so we may have a larger turnout at the next BioBuzz event. I have also been engaging with our social committee to fill our Toys for Tots toy drive this year.
3. What are currently buzzing about? Anything and everything…
Currently in my personal life I am buzzing about helping animals without homes, I have been volunteering with Lucky Dog Animal Rescue at their adoption events for dogs and cats. I have also been working on crocheting projects, which I have found to be a good, relaxing way to end the day.
4. If you could travel back in time – what early career advice would you give yourself?
The number one advice I can say is to always remember to take time for yourself and breathe. The second advice to give is to not bring your work home with you, or keep it in the office if you’re working from home.
5. FUN question. If you could build your own AI model… what would it be?
I have an AI model that can make a pun out of any scientific term you put in.
