5 Questions With Heather Mudrick, Clinical Practice Director at Workforce Genetics
“5 Questions With…” is a weekly BioBuzz series where we reach out to interesting people to share a little about themselves, their work, and maybe something completely unrelated. This week we welcome our own Heather Mudrick, Clinical Practice Director at Workforce Genetics.
Heather has been in the clinical and life science recruiting business for 28 years, including running her own firm, Clintel Services, Inc., for sixteen of them. Prior to closing the company in 2019, Heather helped to grow the company into a leading clinical search firm with a trusted reputation for quality and service among many of the top pharma, biotech, CROs, and medical device companies. Heather has a proven track record of developing long-term client and candidate relationships and delivering exceptional results with experience in Clinical, Regulatory, Drug Safety, R&D, Medical Affairs, and Manufacturing. She enjoys spending her down time with her two grown children, watching TV with her two french bulldogs on her lap, or hanging with friends and enjoying dinner and drinks.
1) Please introduce yourself to our audience by looking back at your education, training, and career.
Hi, my name is Heather Mudrick, I am the Clinical Practice Director here at Workforce Genetics. I actually fell into the recruiting field after deciding not to pursue my lifelong dream of being a teacher. I have always liked helping people and have been told I’m a great listener and give great advice. After starting my career as a recruiter I realized I can still use those traits to help people in a different way—to help them better their careers!
I joined Workforce Genetics in 2021 and have had the pleasure of expanding my career outside of the clinical realm and have learned so much. I also never thought I’d like working from home but I love it and wouldn’t want to go back into an office.
2) Tell us more about your day-to-day in your current role at Workforce Genetics. What excites you most about your job?
My day-to-day work here at Workforce Genetics involves a lot of networking and talking to clients and candidates. I source candidates on LinkedIn or Indeed, or through referrals of people I have spoken with in the past.
Establishing excellent working relationships with clients and candidates is really the goal here. I talk to clients about their expanding teams and how we can help bring them quality candidates. I talk to candidates about jobs we are assisting to fill, their skills and experience, what they are looking for in their next career move, why they are looking, etc. I also manage a team of recruiters helping them to grow their career.
3) What are the top things you look for when you’re looking for the perfect candidate to fill your clients’ position?
I look for candidates who not only have the skillset my clients are looking for, but who also have the desire to make a job change. I really like working with candidates who have an outgoing personality and who really allow me to get to know them deeper than surface level. When candidates open up about why they want to make a job change or what they are really looking for and why, it helps me tremendously in finding them a role that they will be very happy in.
4) You ran your own business, Clintel Services, for a long time before joining the Workforce Genetics team. What advice or words of wisdom do you have for someone who is thinking of starting their own business?
Starting your own business isn’t always as easy as people think. There is a lot to take into account but with hard work and dedication it is possible and very rewarding.
I would tell someone to make sure you have a great business plan and know how to execute it. Surround yourself with people who are knowledgeable and can advise you. Put in the hard work and long hours and be willing to do the job yourself, don’t just expect others to do the work.
5) Where is somewhere that you’re hoping to travel to in the near future, and why?
When I get the opportunity to travel I like to go tropical. I would love to take a fun girls’ trip anywhere sunny or take my kids to a tropical island. I’m open—give me the sun, the beach, and a pool and I’m happy!
