On November 3, public officials and FITCI partners gathered at the nonprofit’s portion of the building at 321 Ballenger Creek to celebrate the new beginning. The ceremony concluded with elected officials and partners kicking off the renovations themselves by taking down a wall with golden sledgehammers.
When Kathie Callahan Brady joined FITCI (Frederick Innovative Technology Center, Inc.) in 2016, the nonprofit incubator and accelerator only had 12 companies and a low success rate. Now, in 2022, FITCI has 74 members, a 93% success rate, and is currently expanding into its third building.
There are several incubators across the region that have proven to be a fantastic option for biohealth startup companies. These incubators provide the right mix of services, amenities and mentorship programs that help young companies navigate complex processes, find their way and succeed.
Frederick-based company NanoBioFAB (Nanotechnology and Biotechnology Fabrication), is working with the Defense Health Agency and West Virginia University to improve training for medical and nursing students nationwide. The company, co-founded by Xiaonao Liu and Ruoting Yang, creates small nanosensors that, when added to medical mannequins, can provide feedback to students.
This year, Meridian BioGroup of Frederick, Maryland is celebrating its 15th year in business. The compliance, validation, and regulatory services provider has grown substantially in that time, and continues to put in the work to expand and improve. Co-founders Thomas Blake and Alison Demarest take pride in the work of their employees, Meridian’s work culture, and the expertise of the company in the biotech and pharmaceutical fields.
The Frederick Innovative Technology Center business incubator and accelerator, or FITCI, as it is better known, has been a linchpin for the Frederick, Maryland life science ecosystem for more than 15 years. BioHealth Capital Region signature companies like RoosterBio, Inc., BioFactura, Theradaptive, KempBio (now Kemp Proteins), and Bridgepath Scientific all made their start at FITCI.
