Set to open in fall 2024, 4MLK is more than just a building—it’s a game-changer for West Baltimore. This 8-story, 250,000-square-foot facility will provide critical lab and office space for scientists, entrepreneurs, and innovators working on the cutting edge of technology and medicine. Positioned at the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd and Baltimore St., 4MLK is designed to be a beacon of collaboration, where ideas flow freely, and breakthroughs in human health are made daily.
For Shaab, 4MLK symbolizes the realization of her lifelong vision- to put Baltimore on the global map as a leader in life sciences.
“We’re creating a first-rate scientific environment right here, in the heart of our city,” Shaab says.
Her excitement is palpable, and for good reason—Baltimore is on the brink of something big.
4MLK: A Hub for Innovation and Community
At the heart of 4MLK is its 160,000 square feet of wet lab space, tailor-made for emerging biotech companies and researchers. While this space undoubtedly serves as a hub for scientific exploration, it is equally designed to nurture community and encourage meaningful connections. A 16,000-square-foot event space will host everything from networking events to educational programs, inviting the greater Baltimore community to engage with the groundbreaking work within its walls.
One of 4MLK’s standout features is Connect Labs Baltimore, a flexible lab infrastructure for life sciences and high-tech industries like computational engineering and energy. This adaptable space is crucial for growing companies, allowing them to scale up while staying rooted in Baltimore’s vibrant biotech scene.
Beyond the labs, the project is designed to transform the streetscape around Baltimore Street and MLK Blvd, delivering a public plaza and retail spaces that will breathe new life into the neighborhood. With Phase II already in the works, set to add another 250,000 square feet, 4MLK is just the beginning.
Jane Shaab: Baltimore’s Biotech Champion
The effort to position Baltimore as a biotechnology leader began with Jane Shaab, well before the launch of 4MLK. Mrs. Shaab is deeply passionate about her hometown. Raised in Baltimore, Shaab always felt a connection to the city. “I’ve always identified strongly with Baltimore,” she says, her pride shining through. This connection shaped her career, from working with urban planning giants like The Rouse Company to her current role as Executive Director of the University of Maryland (UM) BioPark.
Under Shaab’s leadership, the UM BioPark has become a thriving ecosystem for life sciences. The park is 14-acre, right adjacent to UM, and home to biotech companies, research centers, and medical facilities. In 2017, it was named the “Outstanding University Research Park of the Year” by the Association for University Research Parks (AURP), a testament to Shaab’s relentless drive.
Shaab’s commitment to fostering innovation while uplifting her city has earned her accolades, including the Icon Honors Award from the Maryland Daily Record in 2020.

“I’ve always seen Baltimore’s potential. Now, we’re bringing that vision to life,” Shaab reflects.
