5 Questions with Matteo Salvadori, Business Development & Sales Director US | Global BD – Associate Partner for PQE

1. Please introduce yourself to our audience by looking back at your education, training, and career path.
I am Italian and I live in Italy, close to Florence and the beautiful Chianti hills. My educational background is in Economics and Finance. I started working when I was very young and before joining PQE, where I have been working for eight years, I had several professional experiences that led me to be who I am today. I am proud to work in the pharmaceutical industry and to be continuously in contact with great professionals; I believe it offers me an important opportunity for continuous improvement.
2. Can you share more about your specific role at PQE Group? What are your main goals in this role, and what’s your favorite part about your job?
My primary function within PQE Group is Business Development at a global level. After spending the last four years involved in the APAC Region, I have recently been given the opportunity to pursue a new, very interesting and challenging journey — working with the US market.
My main focus is understanding the clients’ needs and establishing a solid foundation of trust with our partners and clients. What I love about this job is building human relationships with people, and having the opportunity to travel and discover new environments is something that is very fascinating to me. And speaking of the US itself, soon I will be temporarily relocated, together with my family, to New Jersey for the entire summer. I am very excited and hope to have a wonderful experience, create many new connections, and enjoy learning more about and living in the United States!

4. Consulting is becoming a popular career path, particularly for scientists and medical professionals. What, in your opinion, are the top skills needed to be successful in a life science-focused consulting role?
Consulting is for people who thrive on problem-solving and challenging situations, utilizing detailed, accurate, and appropriate critical thinking and risk-based approaches.
In my opinion, to be a successful consultant, one must be humble about the fact that one person can never know everything — some projects will push you out of your comfort zone. For me, this is the key – and challenge – for continuous improvement.
5. Now for the fun question – what is the best piece of advice that you’ve ever been given?
Throughout my journey I have had several leaders and mentors; some of them were very tough, and each of them have, or had, their own particular characteristics. I have always tried to absorb all their insights, and their (sometimes hard) lessons, and to learn from the mistakes I have made to become the professional that I am today.
I’d like to offer a special mention to Giacomo and Carmelo, who, since I joined PQE Group, believed in me from day one and who “simply” suggested and pushed me to be myself to make use of my “natural talent,” which we all have in there somewhere.
