This article is part of our 5 Questions With series, one of our ongoing People & Places Features. We love it because despite the consistent questioning, the answers are all unique. Be sure to FOLLOW us on LinkedIn to tell us what you think.

1. What did you want to be when you grow up? How’d you get from there to here?

I arrived at the life sciences after previous successful careers in the real estate and media-marketing industries. I had an “ah ha moment” while filming a project for a hospital client when I saw the impact of patient care up close and I knew this was where I wanted to go.

As a lifelong learner, my action plan for a new direction included specialized pharmaceutical sales and medical device sales training programs. Since transitioning to the life sciences, I’ve also witnessed cutting-edge clinical research produce life-saving vaccines — reaffirming my commitment and passion for impacting patient health.

My work has spanned the clinical research, biotech, and medical device areas where I’ve developed solid client relationships and forged new strategic partnerships. One of these partnerships was created when I secured a pilot program for a patient screening platform with Maryland’s largest IPA. Most recently, I worked with a CRO empowering physicians nationwide to bring clinical research to their patients and communities – often in areas where clinical research was not previously accessible.

I am eager to continue in this direction focusing on business development and expanding markets.

2. How are you helping to build a more connected community?

BioBuzz’s mission is simple: to be more connected. Our regionally-focused storytelling, programs, events, and experiences create, connect, and amplify impact across the life science workforce in growing hubs. We vibe with people who value community and connection like us. We’d love for you to share how you’re building a more connected community… and any support that you need from our community to continue to accomplish this mission.

As soon as I learned about BioBuzz, I immediately connected and encouraged others to do the same. Here in the DMV, we are fortunate to have an ever-growing biotech corridor. We don’t have to go far to make an impact when we can connect with local industry leaders, public-private partnerships, and start-ups matched with the right resources to make things happen. Bio Buzz continues to play a critical role in creating a bright future for everyone.

I’ve taken the opportunity to share my experiences and career journey one-on-one with those considering a new career in the life sciences. I hear aspirations of being part of something larger at a new and exciting time. When forging ahead in a career, each person has specific motivations, perspectives, resources, and unique capabilities. My conversations have conveyed important practical lessons, encouragement, and objective feedback for creating an action plan and a path forward.

3. What are currently buzzing about? Anything and everything…

As we know, medical knowledge doubles in the brief span of about 2-3 months. I’m focused on learning as much as possible about Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare. I recently completed a course diving deep into clinical data, machine learning, and evaluating applications of “AI in Healthcare” – including a capstone project. It’s clear that artificial intelligence can support, enhance, and guide both patient care and care delivery operations.

4. If you could travel back in time – what early career advice would you give yourself?

OR what career advice would you shout from the rooftops now? The more the merrier…

I was recently asked about my top 3 career accomplishments — and while I’ve received many awards, recognitions, and served in leadership positions, I arrived at these three areas:

  • The people I’ve met, the relationships I’ve built, and the lives I’ve impacted.
  • The things that I’ve learned along the way — life lessons, new areas of knowledge, and professional experiences.
  • Finding ways to make things happen — often creating opportunities without a roadmap.

So the career advice I can share is simple: Always be learning, always be connecting, and despite any setbacks and roadblocks, always be focused and keep moving forward to achieve your goals.

5. FUN question. You have expertise in combination products. What combo perfectly summarizes you and why?

As a Maryland native, the perfect combination that summarizes me is “Blue Crabs with Old Bay Seasoning” — Maryland blue crabs are special to our Chesapeake Bay region and while most fall prey to predators, only few survive — The blue crab’s scientific name translates into “magnificent swimmer with a savory taste” and are Maryland’s most valuable commercial fishery.

Blue crabs bring so many people together for great memorable times — whether family, friends, or strangers who become friends – it’s always fun! Blue crabs are resilient with hard shells on the outside and can withstand quite a bit. Inside, their meat is sweet with the perfect balance along with the savory seasoning of another Maryland classic — Old Bay.

Quite simply, I’m a strong sales survivor with a proven business development track record. I am determined, earnest, driven, and passionate, with a firm claw grip on my professional purpose to make a valuable impact. I’m also seasoned with the right experience on how to bring people together for mutual success.

Moreover, my skill set and capabilities are as numerous as the bountiful ways to prepare and enjoy blue crabs — steamed and eaten from the shell, baked or broiled as crab cakes, the foundation for a delicious soup, imperial, or in a creamy dip — an unforgettable flavor!
