The Pennsylvania Biotechnology Center (PABC) will host a special community event on September 26, 2024, to celebrate the release of a new book by Dr. Timothy M. Block, Curing Disease from the Ground Up: How to Operate a Biotechnology Business Incubator. Dr. Block is the co-founder of the Hepatitis B Foundation, the Baruch S. Blumberg Institute, and the PABC, and he will present key insights from his latest work.
Published by Springer Nature, Dr. Block’s book offers a behind-the-scenes look into the creation of the PABC, which began as an ambitious vision in 2006. In the nearly two decades since its founding, the center has become a critical driver of both scientific discovery and economic development in Pennsylvania and beyond. The PABC has nurtured more than 100 life sciences companies and, today, is recognized as one of the leading biotech incubators in the U.S., boasting advanced research facilities and a thriving community of innovators.
The book explores the unconventional reasons for launching the PABC in Doylestown, PA, and provides practical insights for others looking to replicate its success. Dr. Block recounts his early efforts in fostering a collaborative environment where researchers, entrepreneurs, and biotech companies could work together to solve some of the most pressing health challenges, including hepatitis B and liver cancer.
A Leader in Biotechnology and Public Health
A highly regarded virologist, Dr. Block co-founded the Hepatitis B Foundation in 1991 alongside his wife, Joan Block, and colleagues Jan and Paul Witte. The Foundation has since grown into a leading global nonprofit dedicated to improving the lives of those affected by hepatitis B, a disease that impacts millions of people worldwide.
Through the Foundation’s research arm, the Baruch S. Blumberg Institute, Dr. Block and his team have spearheaded groundbreaking research in the areas of antiviral drugs and biomarkers for liver cancer. The creation of the PABC has only strengthened their efforts, allowing them to expand research opportunities and support more innovative startups.
In his book, Dr. Block details the step-by-step process of building the PABC from the ground up, sharing lessons learned and offering guidance for others interested in creating biotechnology incubators. “The PABC was a leap of faith,” Dr. Block writes. “But the belief in collaboration and innovation has always been at the heart of what we do. An Event Celebrating Vision and Innovation
The event, which will be held at 4 p.m. at the PABC, 3805 Old Easton Road, Doylestown, will feature a presentation by Dr. Block, a moderated discussion, and a book signing. Former Pennsylvania State Senator Joe Conti, a longtime supporter of the PABC and the Hepatitis B Foundation, will serve as the moderator. After the presentation, attendees will have the chance to engage in a Q&A session, followed by a reception with refreshments.
In addition to the in-person event, a live broadcast will be available via Zoom to accommodate those unable to attend in person.
