Cancer AI Alliance Named to TIME100 AI for Breakthroughs in Cancer Research

The Cancer AI Alliance, a pioneering partnership that includes Johns Hopkins researchers, leading cancer centers, and top technology companies, has been named to TIME magazine’s TIME100 AI 2025 list — spotlighting global leaders using artificial intelligence to shape the future.

For the Baltimore–Washington region, the recognition underscores the pivotal role Johns Hopkins continues to play in advancing the intersection of technology and medicine. The alliance is harnessing AI not as a buzzword, but as a practical tool to tackle one of the greatest health challenges of our time: cancer.

At Johns Hopkins, the effort is co-led by Alexis Battle, professor of biomedical engineering and director of the Malone Center for Engineering in Healthcare, and Vasan Yegnasubramanian, oncologist at the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center. Their teams are building AI-driven approaches to make cancer care more precise — from improving early detection to tailoring treatments based on a patient’s unique history.

What sets this alliance apart is its collaborative framework. Instead of siloed data, the Cancer AI Alliance leverages a federated learning model that allows multiple centers to train powerful algorithms without compromising patient privacy. It’s a model of innovation and trust that reflects the best of scientific collaboration.

“This alliance has the potential to rapidly accelerate innovation in cancer care using AI,” said Battle. “Leveraging data and ideas across multiple centers will foster intellectual collaboration and allow us to train more powerful models.”

For the region’s growing life sciences ecosystem, the TIME100 AI recognition is more than an accolade — it’s a signal that the BioHealth Capital Region is becoming a hub where computation, data, and biomedical expertise converge to deliver real-world impact.
