Independence Blue Cross, a Philadelphia-based health insurer and the largest in the Philadelphia region, has added Brendan O’Hara to its team, where he will focus on Corporate Development and Strategic Investments. The move follows nearly five years at Amneal Pharmaceuticals, a NASDAQ-listed pharmaceutical company known for its generics, biosimilars, and specialty pharma businesses, where O’Hara most recently served as Director, Corporate Development.
About Brendan O’Hara
O’Hara joins Independence Blue Cross bringing a deal-maker’s perspective shaped inside one of the industry’s most active corporate development groups, applying it now to the payer side of healthcare. In his new role, he’ll take on many of the same strategic questions he tackled at Amneal — access, affordability, and disciplined capital deployment — but from the vantage point of a health insurer rather than a drug manufacturer, giving Independence Blue Cross a corporate development professional fluent in both sides of the healthcare value chain.
At Amneal, O’Hara spent nearly five years working across a wide range of transactions, including oncology biosimilars, specialty pharma in-licensing and out-licensing agreements, and GLP-1 drug substance and drug product supply contracts. That breadth gave him hands-on experience structuring deals from the ground up across both generics and specialty pharma, exposing him to the commercial, regulatory, and manufacturing considerations that shape pharmaceutical dealmaking. He holds a graduate degree from Columbia Business School.
O’Hara’s tenure at Amneal placed him inside a company scaling rapidly through licensing agreements and strategic partnerships, giving him direct exposure to how corporate development functions support a fast-growing pharmaceutical business’s broader commercial strategy.
Reflecting on the transition, O’Hara shared: “At Amneal, I got to work on a wide variety of deals, providing great insights into how deals get built from the ground up in generics and specialty pharma. I look forward to applying these experiences to the payer side, addressing similar challenges such as access, affordability, and decisions around capital deployment, but from a different perspective.”
