Hovione, a globally-integrated pharmaceutical contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO), announced on September 16, 2026 the opening of 89 Twin Rivers, a new 31,000-square-foot facility at its East Windsor, New Jersey campus that adds two GMP-ready, commercial-scale PSD-3 spray dryers and doubles the company’s U.S. spray drying capacity. Co-CEOs Marco Gil and Antonio Almeida said: “Opening 89 Twin Rivers is more than a capacity expansion. It marks the next chapter in Hovione’s legacy of more than two decades in the U.S. This investment enables us to meet growing demand while further reinforcing our global leadership in pharmaceutical spray drying.”
Solving a Problem That Touches Most New Drugs
Spray drying converts poorly soluble drug ingredients into more bioavailable amorphous solid dispersions, a fix aimed at a widespread problem: roughly 70% of small-molecule drug candidates have poor aqueous solubility, according to Hovione, a challenge the company says it addresses through more than 25 years of specialized spray drying expertise spanning formulation science, predictive development tools, and scale-up know-how. Operating under the East Windsor campus’s existing FDA registration and harmonized quality system, the added capacity is meant to let customers reduce technology transfer complexity, facilitate scale-up, and ensure manufacturing continuity as programs move from development toward commercial supply.
The new facility completes a $100 million investment cycle in New Jersey and will employ approximately 80 people. Gil and Almeida tied the technology to Hovione’s broader offering: “This technology sits within an integrated offering that extends from drug substance through drug product, giving customers a more direct and resilient path from early development to commercial. This is how we help them address poor solubility, one of the industry’s most persistent development challenges, and bring complex medicines to patients faster.”
More Building Planned on the Same Campus
Hovione already has its next expansion mapped out: the company plans to develop roughly 15 adjacent acres into a 125,000-square-foot manufacturing facility over the next five to ten years, with customers able to co-invest in the buildout for priority access to Hovione’s proprietary platforms, engineering expertise, and faster capital deployment on their own programs. David Basile, Americas, framed the current opening as part of that longer commitment: “89 Twin Rivers is a major step forward for Hovione’s U.S. operations and a clear expression of our long-term commitment to East Windsor and New Jersey. Our growth has been built on sustained investment in scientific expertise, technological innovation, advanced manufacturing capabilities, and talented people. As we look to the future, we will continue to strengthen this site as an innovation hub for pharmaceutical development and manufacturing, contributing to the competitiveness of New Jersey’s life sciences ecosystem and to a stronger U.S. manufacturing base.”
The expansion is also part of a broader international push: alongside recent investments in Portugal and Ireland, Hovione is building a network of harmonized development and manufacturing sites across North America, Europe, and Asia, aimed at giving customers regionalized supply options and greater supply chain resilience. East Windsor Mayor Janice S. Mironov and BioNJ President Debbie Hart joined Hovione leadership at a ribbon-cutting ceremony marking the facility’s inauguration on September 15.
