RTI International, the independent scientific research institute headquartered in Research Triangle Park, announced on September 10, 2026 the completion of a $14 million expansion of its Pilot Xcelerator facility on its RTP campus, a 25,000-square-foot buildout that doubles the organization’s commercialization infrastructure capacity. President and CEO Tim J. Gabel said: “The RTI Pilot Xcelerator reflects our commitment to helping innovators move breakthrough technologies from the laboratory to the marketplace. It’s an investment in innovation, commercialization and the future growth of our region and beyond.”
Closing the Gap Between the Lab Bench and the Market
The Pilot Xcelerator is built to solve what RTI calls one of the biggest challenges facing energy and industrial innovators: getting from laboratory-proven technology to something a commercial market will actually adopt. David Dausch, PhD, Vice President of Engineering and Advanced Technology, explained the specific barrier it addresses: “Access to pilot-scale infrastructure can be one of the biggest barriers to commercialization. The Pilot Xcelerator gives innovators a place to prove performance, generate real-world data and reduce risk without having to build that capability themselves.” RTI describes the facility as the only privately owned industrial pilot laboratory in North Carolina, supporting sectors including sustainable aviation fuel, carbon capture, critical minerals, and advanced recycling; the release doesn’t specify how the $14 million expansion was funded.
Technologies Already Moving Through the Pipeline
Several companies have already used the platform to advance technologies toward commercial deployment: Syzygy Plasmonics demonstrated a greenhouse gas-reforming process converting CO2 and methane into low-carbon aviation fuel and is now building a commercial plant; CarbonBridge is testing waste-to-value bioprocessing technology that converts methane into methanol; Aether Fuels is demonstrating conversion of waste carbon feedstock into sustainable aviation fuel; and Lydian Labs has successfully demonstrated power-to-liquids technology, with a commercial-scale demonstration targeted for 2027. The release doesn’t detail which specific Pilot Xcelerator services each company used.
