Greater Philadelphia’s Medicinal Technologies Creates a New “Over-the-Counter Biopharmaceutical” Category

Medicinal Technologies, a biotech research and development company founded in 2018 and operating in the Philadelphia region since 2022, has created a new category of medicine: over-the-counter biopharmaceuticals.  Led by Dr. Sheryene Tejeda, the company’s founder, CEO, and lead medical scientist, Medicinal Technologies aims to fill the space between unregulated supplements and synthetic pharmaceuticals. Backed by a six-figure private investment closed this year, the company is now consolidating its headquarters in Greater Philadelphia.

Filling a Gap Seen in Patient Care

The idea for the company came from Dr. Tejeda’s work in patient care, where she repeatedly saw people left choosing between unregulated supplements and synthetic pharmaceuticals. Medicinal Technologies pivoted to fill that gap.

The company’s flagship product, MEnera, addresses women’s reproductive health. Because it requires no prescription, the company says families who struggle to reach specialty care can still access treatment. Behind MEnera, Medicinal Technologies is developing a pipeline covering male fertility, elevated intraocular pressure, blood sugar regulation, blood pressure, and inflammation.

Building a Scientific and IP Foundation

Medicinal Technologies has laid groundwork for its commercial path this year. The company has filed two U.S. patent applications with the USPTO covering MEnera, one on its formulation and a continuation-in-part on its bioengineering. Its research has also been published in peer-reviewed journals: work on MEnera’s nanocarrier formulation in the International Journal of Drug Delivery Technology, and an in-depth article on the mechanisms of ocular disease, supporting Presigen IV, its candidate for elevated intraocular pressure, in Life (MDPI).

“This year showed that our science holds up to scrutiny,” said Dr. Tejeda. “Our research is published, MEnera’s formulation and bioengineering are covered by patent filings, and MEnera is currently under review by the FDA’s Office of Combination Products as it advances through the 505(b)(2) New Drug Application pathway.”

Growing in Greater Philadelphia

Medicinal Technologies is consolidating its headquarters in Greater Philadelphia and sizing the building for hundreds of future hires, from scientists to mechanical and electrical engineers.

Dr. Tejeda sees the move as a natural fit, “Philadelphia is home, and it’s one of the strongest life sciences regions in the country. Building our headquarters here lets us draw on that talent as we grow toward hundreds of jobs and move more of our pipeline forward.”
