Speaker Bio
Michele Wales, PhD, JD, Principal and Founder of InHouse Patent Counsel
With 25+ years of experience in the biotech sector, Michele has been a general counsel, IP counsel, an entrepreneur, a litigator, a serial investor, and a board participant. She is now ready to shift from the C-Suite’s day-to-day demands to a role where she can leverage her expertise to guide and empower emerging startups developing therapeutics and diagnostics based on DNA, proteins, and antibodies. She founded her law firm, InHouse Patent Counsel (IHPC), over ten years ago to provide C-level biotech legal advice on flexible and affordable financial terms viewed favorably by start-ups and emerging biotech clients. As part of her guidance, she has helped multiple different start-ups build portfolios that led to seven successful exits. Before starting her firm, Michele was the head of Litigation and Intellectual Property at Human Genome Sciences, where she worked for over fifteen years. Under her direction, HGS’ IP portfolio was repeatedly recognized by the Wall Street Journal as one of the “Top 10 Biotech Portfolios” and covered over 10,000 human genes, proteins, and antibodies. She also successfully managed the team that established the Utility Standard for gene-based patents at the United Kingdom’s Supreme Court and the European Patent Office. The International Law Office nominated her team as “In-House Litigation Team of the Year.” Michele received her JD from George Washington National Law Center, her PhD in human genetics and molecular biology from Johns Hopkins Medical School and was an inventor on a patent directed to a gene she discovered involved in promoting cancer. She is asked to frequently speak at international conferences about the patenting of biological products such as DNA, protein, antibodies, and phage and is a co-author of the United States Case Law Section for Antibody Patenting: A Practitioner’s Guide to Drafting, Prosecution, and Enforcement (AIPPI Law Book 5) (2019 and 2023).
