Five Years of Nucleate: Empowering the Next Generation of Biotech Entrepreneurs

Nucleate, a nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering the next generation of biotech leaders, has unveiled its inaugural impact report. Over five years, Nucleate has scaled from a student-led program at the Harvard Biotech Club to a global 501(c)(3) non-profit with 41 chapters operating internationally across 20+ countries. This report showcases the remarkable work the organization and its volunteers has achieved over the course of five years.

Nucleate’s keystone program, the Activator, is a six-month, equity-free educational program designed for academic trainee-led biotech founders. Several groundbreaking companies have emerged from the Nucleate Activator, securing millions in funding and making strides in biotech innovation, some of which are:

  • NextRNA Therapeutics raised $56 million in venture capital to develop therapeutics targeting non-coding RNAs.
  • Manifold Bio secured $45 million as a company focused on protein design technologies and developing biologics.
  • Concerto Biosciences raised $26 million to develop microbial therapies.
  • Glyphic Biotechnologies raised over $44 million and is pioneering next-generation protein sequencing technologies.

The organization, which expanded its reach to Washington, D.C., and Baltimore in 2021, further highlights the success of the regional Activator Program. Recent regional alumni ventures including Aptabridge Therapeutics, Prompt Diagnostics, CurveAssure, and Somnair. Post Activator program these startups have gone on to participate in the LifeBridge Health BioIncubator, the Activate Fellowship, and Rice Business Plan Competition. Together, regional alumni companies have raised over >$3 million in venture and grant funding. We are grateful for the Blackbird Labs sponsorship in helping our regional programming flourish.
