Miltenyi Biotec Reinvests in Montgomery County with New Headquarters

BALTIMORE, MD (March 15, 2022) — Global biotechnology business Miltenyi Biotec is expanding its operations in Maryland and transferring its North American headquarters to Gaithersburg. The company is working on expanding its 1201 Clopper Road facility to support additional manufacturing, research and development, quality assurance, and more. Miltenyi Biotec plans to add 130 new full-time jobs in Maryland, giving it a total of 300 employees in the state by the end of the year.

“By selecting Maryland for its North American headquarters, Miltenyi Biotec will help us continue growing our industry and further our efforts in remaining one of the top 10 life sciences clusters in the nation,” said Governor Larry Hogan. “We welcome the company’s continued investment in Montgomery County and look forward to supporting their efforts in Maryland and across the globe.”

This is not the company’s first investment in Maryland in recent years. In 2014, Miltenyi Biotec acquired Gaithersburg’s lentiviral vector manufacturing company Lentigen Technology Inc., which develops and commercializes therapeutics for stem cell therapies and oncology. In 2017, the company acquired Living Pharma, Inc., a startup of the University of Maryland, Baltimore that develops personalized cell therapy for targeted individuals’ cancers and diseases. Both became part of Miltenyi Biotec’s CDMO business unit with locations in Gaithersburg, Md. and San Jose, Calif.

To assist with job creation, the company has submitted a notice of intent to utilize the state’s More Jobs for Marylanders program and Job Creation Tax Credit, both managed by the Maryland Department of Commerce. There are currently more than three dozen job openings posted on the Miltenyi Biotec website related to its headquarters, distribution, R&D, and CDMO operations in Gaithersburg.

“Miltenyi Biotec’s decision to make Maryland its North American home is a testament to the strength of our life sciences industry as well as the supportive business climate we’ve established in our state,” said Maryland Commerce Secretary Mike Gill. “We’re thrilled the company has chosen to expand and create more good jobs in Maryland.”

For more than 30 years, Miltenyi Biotec has focused on providing innovative products and services to support research throughout the biomedical and cellular therapy fields. With its global headquarters in Germany, Miltenyi Biotec has locations throughout Europe, Asia, Australia, and North America, and distributes its products to more than 50 countries. The company currently employs about 4,000 individuals around the world.

“The Montgomery County life sciences ecosystem encompasses a full range of biotech companies, including leading vector manufacturers like Miltenyi Biotec,” said Benjamin H. Wu, president & CEO of Montgomery County Economic Development Corporation. “Miltenyi Biotec is a global company on the rise, and we are delighted that they will continue advancing biomedical research and supporting cell and gene therapy from their Gaithersburg location.”

“We are so happy to have Miltenyi Biotec in Gaithersburg, and for its confidence and investment in our community! Here’s to a bright future for both the company and its growing workforce,” said Mayor Jud Ashman. Representing the epicenter of life sciences companies in the Washington Metro area, Mayor Ashman added that “our community has the talent, investment capital and research hubs that make Gaithersburg the ideal place for life sciences innovation.”
