Maryland’s biomanufacturing capacity is taking another meaningful step forward. BrightWave LLC, the state’s first fully integrated algae-based biomanufacturer, has secured a $1 million Equitech Growth Fund (EGF) award to expand and upgrade its operations at Harford County’s CONVERGE Center in Aberdeen.
The award, administered through TEDCO, is matched by $2 million from Actual VC, accelerating BrightWave’s commercialization efforts in partnership with Early Charm Ventures. Together, these investments strengthen the region’s position as an emerging hub for sustainable, next-generation biomanufacturing.
This milestone arrives at a moment of momentum for the state’s innovation economy—one that BioBuzz is proud to help champion as a partner in the Tech Hubs Initiative and also an Equitech Growth Fund recipient for our MOORE-Bio program. Other EGF-supported, bio-focused companies include Xcellon Biologics and Rise Therapeutics, underscoring Maryland’s deep and growing bench of capabilities in advanced bioproduction.
Leading a New Algae Biomanufacturing Ecosystem
BrightWave develops state-of-the-art photobioreactor systems that enable high-density, precision-controlled algae growth—supporting applications in food manufacturing, cosmetics, sustainable materials, pigments, fuels, and more. As industries look to decarbonize and shift toward cleaner production models, algae-based systems offer a scalable pathway to dramatically lower emissions and waste.
The new EGF funding builds on Maryland’s earlier $500,000 Build Our Future investment, which helped establish foundational biomanufacturing tools now powering the CONVERGE ecosystem.
The expansion will support:
- Patented photobioreactors for consistent, high-grade algae biomass production
- Specialized downstream processing equipment, including pyrolysis units and dewatering systems
- Infrastructure upgrades to air handling, water processing, environmental controls, and bioprocessing utilities
Once complete, the improvements will transform 1,000 square feet of CONVERGE into a state-of-the-art production floor capable of generating sustainable materials for markets spanning personal care, aerospace, defense, textiles, and construction.
“This award, strengthened by Harford County’s continued partnership, accelerates CONVERGE’s emergence as a premier hub for advanced manufacturing and opens the door to exceptional high-value job creation throughout the region,” — Ken Malone, CEO, Early Charm Ventures
