BioBuzz’s Buzzin’ Brood Student Spotlight series celebrates the next generation of life sciences talent — and the programs, institutions, and organizations investing in them.
Name: Chinenye Ofor
Hometown: Baltimore, MD
Institution: Towson University (Towson, MD)
Role: Student Ambassador, BioBuzz Networks (Summer 2026)
Some people think outside the box. For others, there is no box. Chinenye Ofor refuses to be defined by just one thing.
A double major in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, and Bioinformatics (MB3) and Communication Studies at Towson University, she’s studying science and storytelling side by side and putting these disciplines into practice in unique ways: a TEDx talk drawn from her own research, STEM workshops that make science genuinely engaging for kids, and a research project that treats culture and health communication as inseparable.
This same range and passion shows up in how she spends her time on Towson’s campus. She’s a scholar in the Hill-Lopes Scholars Program, which meets the need for more STEM professionals by supporting women students in male-dominated sectors. She’s Community Relations Chair for the Undergraduate Research Club, where she’s dedicated to helping undergraduate students achieve research excellence. She’s also Student Director of Marketing for the Honors College and a Student Ambassador for Towson’s Fischer College of Science and Mathematics.
Off campus, she’s Communications Lead for BB-Penda, a maternal health nonprofit.
This summer, Chinenye is bringing her cross-disciplinary curiosity to BioBuzz’s BioCatalyst program as the Lead Student Ambassador in the BioHealth Capital Region, made possible through TEDCO’s Equitech Growth Fund.
We sat down with Chinenye to talk about her path into science and communication, what’s exciting her right now, and where she sees herself headed next.
How did you get here?
I have always been interested in science, in elementary school I was a part of many after school science programs and I took AP biology in high school. This deep interest in science made it a no-brainer to major in molecular biology, biochemistry, and bioinformatics at Towson University. But what I didn’t see coming was adding a double major in communication studies. I was the commencement speaker for both middle school and high school, I have always been a people person and a leader but I never thought to pursue that side of me. Communication studies is a way for me to hone those skills and understand the world around me from a different perspective. I love the way both of these disciplines explain the world and encourage exploration and curiosity. Science has given me the analytical mind and knowledge to understand the tiniest of molecular processes and communication studies has given me the awareness and flexible mind to approach people and situations from a new perspective.
Having such a diverse background of knowledge and experiences pushes me to explore opportunities with full force and confidence which has led me to various endeavors like being a TEDx speaker, working in a molecular biology research lab, developing digital health applications for women in sub Saharan Africa, hosting journaling workshops as well as STEM workshops for children. Exploration is a trait I hold dear to my heart and is what has led me to BioBuzz and the life science industry as a whole. I decided to apply after seeing Chris, a fellow TU alum post about the BioCatalyst program. It was a chance for me to explore an industry I had always had an eye on while also gaining experience. I have found that this program and the life sciences industry as a whole is the perfect combination of my diverse background, analytical mind, and people skills. I have learned that in this industry there is always something to do, someone to talk to, and something to learn!
What is currently blowing your mind right now?
I am currently blown away thinking about all the possible fitness classes and activities I can squeeze into this summer. I have already done barre classes, latin dance classes, rock climbing, aqua fitness classes, aerial yoga, and more!
There are so many more classes and activities I have on my list like golfing, pole dancing, and kayaking. I love any chance to learn a new skill and move my body.

If you could travel into the future what does your LinkedIn headline say?
Founder | Innovator | Global Health Technology Expert
This is a bold title for someone who is very type A and appreciates structure and a good plan! I am interested in global health from a scientific and technological standpoint. There are so many amazing innovations waiting to be developed that serve some of the world’s most vulnerable populations. I hope to be on the side of innovation, partnering with companies and governments to make life better for the people they are meant to serve.
There is no map or direct pathway to obtain such a grand headline. Therefore, I am doing everything I can to gain experience. I am conducting my own research project focused on barriers to healthcare after experiencing sexual violence in Nigeria, I am immersing myself in the biotech field and startup world, and I am also gaining the technical scientific skills and knowledge necessary for innovative products and design, and fostering community support.
If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
Teleportation. Although I love traveling and road trips, I hate driving and flying. Teleportation would allow me to skip all the nonsense and get straight to my destination. This superpower also opens up another world of places to visit and things to try.
