BioBuzz’s Buzzin’ Brood Student Spotlight series celebrates the next generation of life sciences talent — and the programs, institutions, and organizations investing in them.

Institution: University of Maryland, College Park (College Park, MD)

Role: Data & Analytics Intern, BioBuzz Networks (Summer 2026)

Few people can say they run sprints in the morning and statistical models in the afternoon. Katherine Hung can. Born in Maryland and raised in Taiwan, she’s a Statistics major at the University of Maryland and a Division I student-athlete on the women’s tennis team.

Outside of the classroom and the court, Katherine is also co-founder of TSA in USA (Taiwanese Student-Athletes in the U.S.), an organization that helps Taiwanese student-athletes navigate opportunities to study and compete in the United States.

Katherine was introduced to BioBuzz through Maryland Athletics’ Maryland Made InTERPship Program, which connects student-athletes with professional development opportunities. She’s now a Data & Analytics Intern as part of BioBuzz’s BioCatalyst Summer 2026 Cohort, made possible through TEDCO’s Equitech Growth Fund — exploring how data and technology can drive impact in the life sciences.

We caught up with Katherine to talk about her path into statistics, what’s currently exciting her, and where she sees her career headed next.

How did you get here?

I was born in Maryland and grew up in Taiwan before returning to the United States to attend the University of Maryland. I’m currently a Statistics major and Division I student-athlete on the women’s tennis team.

Through my coursework and personal projects, I developed an interest in data analytics and using data to solve real-world problems. Outside of school, I co-founded TSA in USA, an organization that helps Taiwanese student-athletes learn about opportunities to study and compete in the United States.

I was introduced to BioBuzz through Maryland Athletics’ InTERPship Program, which connects student-athletes with professional development opportunities. I was drawn to BioBuzz’s mission of connecting talent, innovation, and workforce development within the life sciences community. I’m excited to learn from industry professionals, contribute to meaningful projects, and continue exploring how data and technology can make an impact.

What is currently blowing your mind right now?

I’m fascinated by how quickly AI is changing the way we learn, work, and solve problems. As a Statistics major, it’s exciting to see how data, technology, and AI are being applied across so many industries, including healthcare and life sciences.

If you could explain yourself right now in only emojis…

🎾🏋️‍♀️📊👩‍🍳🎢✈️🇹🇼🌱

These emojis represent some of the things that are important in my life right now. Tennis and fitness have shaped much of my life as a Division I student-athlete. The chart represents my interest in statistics and data analytics, while the chef emoji reflects my interest in cooking and trying new foods.

The roller coaster and airplane represent my love for new experiences, adventures, and travel. Family is one of the most important parts of my life and has always been my biggest source of support. The Taiwan flag represents where I grew up and the culture that influenced who I am today.

The seedling symbolizes growth, curiosity, and my desire to keep learning.

If you could travel into the future, what does your LinkedIn headline say?

Data Analyst | Using Data to Solve Real-World Problems | Passionate About Innovation, Technology, and Growth

I hope to build a career where I can use data to help organizations make informed decisions and create meaningful impact. Through opportunities like BioBuzz and BioCatalyst, I’m excited to learn more about the life sciences industry, expand my skills, and connect with professionals who are shaping the future of innovation.
