DC Startup Week: New Life Sciences / Biotech Track Aims to Make Impact This October

· · 4 min read

This week is the DC Startup & Tech Week’s (DCSTW) conference where startup and tech entrepreneurs can learn from the country’s top founders, investors, and innovators for their own dream startups. This conference is the DC-Maryland-Virginia’s (DMV) largest conference and community in the BioHealth region, and the panels are a surefire way to increase one’s arsenal to power their own business into a mogul of success.

The Outlook for Life Science Innovators in the DMV

With great pleasure, Rachel Rath, head of JLABS @ Washington, DC, will be having a Fireside chat with retired Col. Vic Suarez, founder of BluZoneBio, to discuss what the future of DMV holds for those interested in the ever-growing life science habitat that is the BioHealth region.

“I am very excited about Rachel’s new appointment as head of JLABS @ Washington and looking forward to interviewing her at DCSTW on 25 Oct.  I believe many of us in the life sciences community look forward to understanding her vision for growing life sciences in the DMV region. Many of us are eager to learn how start-ups can gain access to capital and how collaborations, incubators, and JLABS have an important role in advancing innovation.” – Vic Suarez, MS, PMP, CMRP, Founder & Principal Growth Partner of BluZoneBio

This JLABS site serves as a biotech incubator for CBRN and infectious diseases in Washington, DC, brilliantly named BLUE KNIGHT. Rath is the acting Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) leading BLUE KNIGHT; this deep dive between her and Suarez will serve as a mechanism for all innovators, allowing many to learn complex leadership strategies and pathways for their community’s success, as Rath has revolutionized in this sector. Regarding how the Biohealth Capital Region (BHCR) has moved up to No. 3 on the Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology News’ list of the top biopharma clusters in the United States, their discussions are sure to revolve around how this growth and a higher profile for the DMV creates both opportunities and challenges for early-stage life science startups and where they can turn to take their next key steps to grow and develop.

“The DCSTW is a chance for all innovators to learn from like-minded facilitators, further enhancing the DMV’s diverse and revolutionary contributions to both the country and the world’s technical and intellectual evolution. The inclusion of minds such as Rath and many more are just a foot stone of a greater monument that is the biohealth region.” – DC Startup & Tech Week

Unlocking Opportunities for Life Sciences Start-Ups

Every corporation, from the massive quantifiable whole of the company to the small missives that are the individuals, requires direction. The “Quest for Resources” panel is one of several that assist in direction; moderated by Luis T. Gutiérrez, Jr., Executive in Residence, BioHealth Innovation, Inc., he will question speakers Amy Adams, Ashim Subedee, Deborah Hemingway, Jack Miner, and Sara Adams regarding their advice and real-world knowledge of creating successful startups.

“Entrepreneurs often struggle with identifying resources available to them, even within in their local ecosystem,” said Luis Gutierrez, Executive-in-Residence with BioHealth Innovation, Inc. “This panel highlights [s] how to access some of the many resources – specifically including financial resources – available to life science and healthcare technology start-ups in DC, Maryland, and Virginia.”

The DMV is a treasure trove of opportunities, facilitated around the capital’s prime orifice of life science opportunities; while the abundance is unquantifiable, securing any amount of resources will prove game-changing to one’s business or start-up. Communication and networking are just one part of the security of these resources, and the panel will expand on more in-depth methods of actualizing the start-ups’ futures. Experts from the U.S. government and industry veterans such as the few mentioned above will share practical insight on navigating the complexities of these opportunities; no matter how far you have come in your entrepreneurship, the key to paramount of success is knowledge beyond one’s capability.

Lessons from the Journeys of Life Science Tycoons

Another part of this conference is the “Life Science Innovators’ Showcase” panel which will explore the journeys of several life science companies and what has allowed them to be successful biotech and MedTech companies. Moderated by Scott Shepherd, Innovation Activation Manager @ JLABS Washington, DC, the panel will discuss lessons bypassing the complexities of start-ups with Arvin Gouw, Cayce Dorrier, Charles Cathlin, and Katya Vert-Wong; these innovators will inspire those either struggling or on the right track, and their discussion will prove most beneficial to even the mundane of folks.

The supplementary value of the DCSTW is more than can be measured. These panels and the information they will provide to the region will prove most valuable in years ahead when DMV has become not only the nation’s health capital but likely the world’s.
