As Maryland’s BioHealth Capital Region continues to evolve, Frederick, MD is quickly becoming a powerhouse for scientific innovation, startup activity, and community-driven solutions. That momentum will be on full display June 27–28 at Hood College’s upcoming event: From Science to Startup: The Entrepreneurial Journey.

This two-day interactive workshop, organized by Hood college’s Bioscience Research & Education Center (BREC), is designed to guide scientists, early-stage founders, and professionals—especially those recently displaced from federal roles—through the early stages of bioscience and biotech entrepreneurship. From shaping an initial idea to securing funding and navigating the regulatory landscape, participants will walk away with the foundational tools and insights needed to take the next steps in their entrepreneurial journey.

The workshop will feature expert-led panels, hands-on sessions, and curated networking opportunities with experienced founders, venture advisors, and industry mentors. Whether you’re looking to commercialize your own research or simply explore what’s possible in Maryland’s innovation ecosystem, the event offers valuable access to knowledge, community, and opportunity.

Importantly, this event arrives at a crucial time. As shifting federal contracts and research priorities have left many scientists across the region facing career uncertainty, initiatives like this provide both inspiration and actionable support. Hood College is helping bridge the gap between scientific expertise and entrepreneurial readiness—ensuring that top talent doesn’t just remain in the region but thrives here.

Thanks to the generous support of event sponsors—including the Federal Laboratory Consortium, Kite Pharma, Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research, and the Frederick County Office of Economic Development—registration fees have been kept intentionally affordable to maximize access for all participants.

The workshop is open to scientists, researchers, students, and aspiring entrepreneurs across Maryland and the greater BioHealth Capital Region. If you’re looking to connect, learn, and explore how your scientific work can lead to real-world impact, this is a can’t-miss opportunity.
