TELA Bio, Inc. , the Malvern, Pennsylvania-based medical technology company, announced on August 31, 2026 a strategic cost reduction initiative alongside the departure of Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer Roberto Cuca, effective the same day.
CEO Heather Getz said: “On behalf of the Board and management team, I would like to thank Roberto for his many contributions to TELA Bio over the past five years. Roberto has been instrumental in helping us scale operations in support of the Company’s long-term growth aspirations.”
An 18% Cost Cut Meant to Stretch Runway Into 2028
TELA Bio expects the initiative to reduce annual operating expenses by approximately $17.0 million, including a roughly 20% reduction in headcount and a streamlining of external resources. The company expects to incur a one-time restructuring charge of approximately $1.5 million in the third quarter of 2026, primarily related to severance and other employee costs.
According to TELA Bio, the cost reductions are expected to extend the company’s cash runway into 2028.
Getz said the changes follow “a comprehensive review of our business and corporate infrastructure to identify opportunities to operate more efficiently,” adding: “We are focused on disciplined execution, strengthening the business, and creating a more efficient organization positioned to deliver sustainable long-term growth.” TELA Bio said it plans to provide additional details about the cost-reduction initiative during its third-quarter 2026 earnings call, expected in early November.
The company did not name an interim or permanent successor to Cuca’s COO/CFO responsibilities, nor did it provide a specific reason for his departure beyond recognizing his contributions during his tenure. “We are deeply grateful for his commitment to the organization, and we wish him all the best in his future endeavors,” Getz said.
