Penn Biotech Group Connects Penn’s Graduate Talent With Windrose Consulting Group

Penn Biotech Group (PBG), the cross-disciplinary, student-run graduate organization based at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, hosted Windrose Consulting Group for a recruiting session on September 10, bringing together more than 25 graduate students and postdocs from across Penn and CHOP to learn about careers in life sciences consulting. The session ran well past its scheduled end time, with attendees staying to learn more about Windrose and explore ways to get involved.

What Life Sciences Consulting Actually Covers

Life sciences consulting is a broad field spanning pharmaceutical, biotech, medical device, and diagnostics companies, with work typically falling into a few buckets: drug pricing and market access, commercialization and product launch strategy, portfolio and pipeline strategy, clinical data analytics, and increasingly, AI integration into drug discovery and patient outcomes work. The field splits roughly into two tracks: generalist firms like McKinsey, BCG, and L.E.K., which run large life sciences practices alongside broader consulting work, and specialist firms — ZS Associates, ClearView Healthcare Partners, IQVIA, Trinity Life Sciences, and Windrose among them — that work almost exclusively with pharma and biotech clients. That specialization tends to mean deeper industry fluency earlier in a career, though often at the cost of a narrower brand outside life sciences if a consultant later wants to pivot industries.

Entry points vary widely: PhD and MD holders are especially valued for scientific credibility on technical engagements, MBAs typically enter through standard recruiting pipelines, and undergraduates with science or public health backgrounds can land analyst roles at boutique firms. After a few years, consultants commonly exit into biotech or pharma industry roles, venture capital, or advanced degree programs — which is part of why student organizations like PBG treat these recruiting sessions as a serious pipeline into the industry, not just a one-off networking event.

Who Ran the Session

Greg Certo, Senior Engagement Manager, and Jasmine Line, Senior Analyst, both of Windrose, shared their own experiences and connected directly with PBG members throughout the session. On the PBG side, Brian Lorenzo Balisi, Sishir Surjit, and Aline Uwase organized the event, with Mark Kohler, Senior Principal at Windrose, credited for making the connection and helping bring Windrose’s presenters to PBG in the first place.
