The National Institute for Innovation in Manufacturing Biopharmaceuticals (NIIMBL) has welcomed Dr. Paul Collins as a NIIMBL Senior Fellow to lead its Process Intensification (PI) Program. NIIMBL Institute Director Kelvin Lee said the organization is “very excited to have Paul’s experience and enthusiastic leadership of the PI Program and his perspective in advancing innovation for the industry.”
About Dr. Paul Collins
In the role, Collins will lead the PI Program’s five workstreams, which bring together industry stakeholders to invent, design, demonstrate, and support the commercialization of integrated and intensified biopharmaceutical manufacturing approaches.
NIIMBL’s flagship initiatives — Process Intensification, Big Data, Viral Vectors, and Preventive Medical Countermeasures, unite companies across the industry to shape a shared vision for manufacturing’s future and pinpoint the projects, technologies, and initiatives needed to overcome the biggest barriers to putting them into practice.
Collins brings more than 30 years of pharmaceutical experience from Merck and Eli Lilly in CMC R&D roles focused on new molecule process development, spanning synthetic small molecules, monoclonal antibodies, therapeutic proteins, peptides, and genetic medicine modalities. At Lilly, he held multiple management positions, including leading a technology development group that advanced flow chemistry and commercialized continuous manufacturing and online analysis solutions for synthesis and formulation; over his career at Merck and Lilly, he contributed to the development, regulatory approval, and market launch of six pharmaceutical products. Most recently, he served as Director of Industrial Research at Purdue University, developing academic-industrial pharmaceutical collaborations.
Collins is recognized in the pharmaceutical community as a leader in FDA-related industry initiatives for advanced manufacturing technologies. He has been active with the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) for more than a decade, including chairing its Pharmaceutical Forum in 2015–2016, and he helped initiate the first FDA-AIChE co-sponsored meeting on continuous manufacturing adoption.
Collins holds a BE in Chemical Engineering from Vanderbilt University and a Ph.D. in Biochemical Engineering from Northwestern University.
