People on the Move: John C. Reed, M.D., Ph.D., Joins Madrigal Pharmaceuticals’ Board of Directors

Madrigal Pharmaceuticals has appointed John C. Reed, M.D., Ph.D., to its Board of Directors. Reed currently serves as Executive Vice President- Pharmaceuticals, Research & Development at Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine, a role he has held since April 2023 and where he sits on J&J’s Executive Committee overseeing oncology, immunology, neuroscience, and other therapeutic areas.

Madrigal Chairman Julian Baker said he was pleased to welcome Reed to the board, calling him “one of the biopharma industry’s most accomplished physician-scientists and research leaders, with an extraordinary track record of advancing innovative medicines and building premier research organizations.” Madrigal CEO Bill Sibold added that Reed’s insights across drug discovery, translational medicine, and global R&D strategy will be an asset to the board as the company builds on the launch of Rezdiffra and advances its MASH pipeline.

Before joining J&J, Reed spent nearly five years as EVP, Global Head of R&D at Sanofi, and roughly five years as Global Head of Roche Pharma Research & Early Development (pRED) at Roche. He also served as President and CEO of Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute, now Sanford Burnham Prebys, where he established disease-focused research centers and platform technology organizations. Across his career, Reed has authored more than 900 scientific publications and holds over 130 patents; he is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and is consistently recognized among the world’s most highly cited researchers in life sciences and medicine.

Reed holds a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry from the University of Virginia and an M.D. and Ph.D. in Immunology from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, where he also completed his residency in Clinical Pathology. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Molecular Biology at the Wistar Institute of Anatomy and Biology.
