The Pennsylvania Biotechnology Center (PABC) and the Baruch S. Blumberg Institute have named Nick Spring, BSc, DipM, MCIM, Vice President for Strategy and Commercial Development, expanding his role after serving as the PABC’s first Entrepreneur in Residence since July 2024.
“Nick’s working knowledge of the PABC and Blumberg’s commercial and scientific strengths, coupled with his experience in industry and as an entrepreneur, makes him the ideal person for this essential new position,” said CEO Louis P. Kassa III, MPA.
About Nick Spring
Spring’s career includes executive roles at Merck & Co., where he managed global operations in the UK, Europe, Australia, and the U.S. He founded and led Topaz Pharmaceuticals through multiple funding rounds to a successful new drug registration and subsequent sale to Sanofi. He was CEO of Reliefband, an FDA-cleared medical device company, where he spearheaded the development and launch of innovative products, and was a senior partner at Alten Calsoft Labs (now ACL Digital), a software company, where he led the life sciences practice.
Spring is a former adjunct professor at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, which merged into Saint Joseph’s University in 2022, and serves as an adjudicator for the Life Sciences Management course at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School. The announcement did not specify the institutions where Spring earned his BSc, DipM, or MCIM credentials, and no further detail on those was found elsewhere.

The PABC uses a services-based approach to nurture and guide its member companies to success, advance biotechnology, and maximize synergies among nonprofit scientists and their commercial colleagues. The PABC has more than 100 member companies and organizations, primarily small to mid-size biotech and life sciences companies, nearly 60 of which operate on its Doylestown campus, home to the Hepatitis B Foundation and the Blumberg Institute. The PABC also manages B+labs at Cira Centre, an incubator in Philadelphia with 24 resident companies, in partnership with Brandywine Realty Trust.
