United Therapeutics Corporation, a Nasdaq-listed public benefit corporation based in Silver Spring, Maryland, and Durham, North Carolina, that develops therapies for rare diseases and pioneers alternatives to expand the supply of transplantable organs, has announced the appointment of Victor Dzau, M.D., to its Board of Directors, effective July 22, 2026. The appointment marks the latest step in the company’s ongoing board refreshment effort.
About Victor Dzau, M.D.
Dr. Dzau joins United Therapeutics’ board at what Chairperson and CEO Martine Rothblatt called one of the company’s most exciting moments, as it pursues its public benefit mission of developing transplantable organs and organ alternatives for patients suffering from end-stage organ failure. Nominating and Governance Committee Chairperson Christopher Causey pointed to Dr. Dzau’s deep knowledge of the healthcare system and the broader industry as a significant asset for the board as it oversees a company working to transform patient care.
Dr. Dzau brings a decorated career as a physician-scientist and global health leader to the role. He recently completed a 12-year tenure as President of the National Academy of Medicine, formerly known as the Institute of Medicine, and in July 2026 returned to Duke University as James B. Duke Distinguished Professor of Medicine, Chancellor Emeritus for Health Affairs, and Director of the Mandel Center for Hypertension Research. He previously served for a decade as Chancellor for Health Affairs at Duke University and as President and CEO of the Duke University Health System, and earlier chaired the Department of Medicine at both Harvard Medical School/Mass General Brigham and Stanford University School of Medicine, where he also directed the Falk Cardiovascular Research Center.
Scientifically, Dr. Dzau’s research in cardiovascular medicine and genetics laid the foundation for ACE inhibitors, lifesaving therapies now used globally to treat hypertension and heart failure, and he helped pioneer gene therapy for vascular disease, work he continues to build on in his current research into cardiac regeneration. He remains deeply engaged in international health policy, currently serving as Co-Chair of the G20 High-Level Independent Panel on Financing Pandemic Preparedness and Response and contributing to global collaborations on pandemic response, equitable vaccine access, and health systems strengthening. He holds a Bachelor of Science and a Doctor of Medicine from McGill University.
Commenting on the appointment, Dr. Dzau said: “I have admired United Therapeutics’ mission and progress over its 30-year history, and am thrilled to join its Board of Directors at one of the company’s most exciting moments. I look forward to supporting United Therapeutics as it pursues groundbreaking treatments for rare diseases and the bold mission of pioneering biomedical and bioengineering breakthroughs to help address the severe shortage of transplantable organs.”
