Virginia Tops U.S. for Workforce Training Program, Bolstering Life Sciences and Tech Growth

Virginia is making headlines again for its workforce development programs. The Virginia Talent Accelerator Program has been ranked No. 1 in the nation for workforce training by Area Development in its annual Top States for Doing Business report. This recognition follows the program’s third consecutive No. 1 ranking in the Business Facilities Rankings Report, cementing Virginia’s reputation as a leader in preparing job-ready talent.

“Virginia doesn’t follow, we lead, and our Virginia Talent Accelerator Program is leading the nation in workforce training,” said Governor Glenn Youngkin. “For many companies, this program is a major factor in choosing to invest in Virginia, because it provides tailored training that equips employees with the right skills from day one.”

Secretary of Commerce and Trade Juan Pablo Segura added, “People are the driving force behind economic growth, and Virginia is setting the pace in equipping workers with the skills needed now and in the future. The Virginia Talent Accelerator is a prime example of how we’re creating a job-ready workforce that gives businesses the certainty they need to put down roots and expand here in the Commonwealth.”

The Talent Accelerator Program, managed by the Virginia Economic Development Partnership (VEDP) in collaboration with the Virginia Community College System, delivers fully customized recruitment and training services to new and expanding companies at no cost. Since its launch in 2019, the program has helped create more than 17,000 announced jobs across Virginia.

Recent high-profile projects supported by the program include:

  • Microporous in Danville, VA – 2,000 jobs
  • Micron Technology, Inc. in Manassas, VA – 340 jobs
  • Eli Lilly and Company, which recently announced a $5 billion investment in the state, creating 650 high-wage positions with Talent Accelerator support

Virginia’s strong showing extends beyond workforce training. The state climbed to No. 7 overall in the Top States for Doing Business rankings, with notable improvements in Access to Qualified Labor (No. 5), Energy Availability (No. 8), and Corporate Tax Structure (No. 10).

VEDP President and CEO Jason El Koubi emphasized the program’s impact: “By collaborating directly with companies to provide tailored recruitment and training solutions, we give employers the certainty to grow and thrive in every region of the Commonwealth. Area Development’s recognition affirms the program’s impact and showcases the dedication of our team to making Virginia the premier destination for business.”

With these rankings and ongoing investments, Virginia continues to position itself as a top destination for life sciences, tech, and advanced manufacturing companies looking for a highly skilled, ready-to-work talent pool.
