These Maryland Companies are Going on a Biohealth Trade Mission to the U.K.

February 20, 2019

The Maryland Department of Commerce is taking several companies on a biohealth trade mission to the U.K. from March 5-7, 2019.

This Biohealth Trade Mission will provide Maryland companies with an exclusive opportunity to meet with potential investors, partners or customers and start discussions with economic development agencies in the vibrant biotechnology cluster in the U.K. One-to-one meetings with relevant companies and tours to the technology hubs in the Midlands will be organized prior to the trip, as well as other opportunities to experience to the Life Science sector in the region.

“The goal is for them to expand their market,” says Ernesto Chanona, Ph.D., Manager, Business and Innovation Development Office of BioHealth & Life Sciences. “They may collaborate, sell or buy from U.K. business; depending on what the Maryland companies are seeking. In general, they are there to enter the UK market and foster relationships with companies there.”

This Mission will also provide the Maryland Department of Commerce an opportunity to continue fostering relationships with UK economic development agencies to attract companies to Maryland who want to enter the US market. Maryland has a recent history of success to build on with UK headquartered Autolus Therapeutics. Earlier this year Autolus announced Rockville, Maryland as their new US commercial manufacturing for their autologous blood cancer and solid tumor T cell programs. The state of Maryland and Montgomery country were both highly involved in making this expansion possible.

As part of this trade mission, a “Meet the Buyer” event has been organized by The Midlands Engine, an economic development coalition of Councils, Combined Authorities, Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEP), Universities and businesses across the Midlands region of Britan.

The Midlands Engine is at the cutting-edge of the UK life sciences sector and home to over 1000 life science companies. Working in close partnership with the Department for International Trade (DIT) in the US, we have already helped many UK delegations generate strong connections and reinforce trade commitments.

This ‘Meet the Buyer’ event is a fantastic opportunity for Maryland companies to meet face-to-face with interested buyers from the Midlands region. It’s also an opportunity to showcase the state of Maryland and the Biohealth Capital region as one of the US’s largest innovative biohealth clusters.
