Research Roundup

CRISPR/Cas9-Based Gene Drive Could Suppress Agricultural Pests

Researchers at N.C. State University developed a “homing gene drive system” based on CRISPR/Cas9 that could be used to suppress populations of Drosophila suzukii vinegar flies, the university announced. These flies devastate soft-skinned fruit in North America, Europe and parts of South America. The N.C. State researchers developed dual CRISPR gene drive systems that “targeted a specific D. suzukii gene called doublesex, which is important for sexual development in the flies.” Targeting the doublesex gene resulted in female sterility in numerous experiments as females were unable to lay eggs, the research team said.

Study: Preoperative Stereotactic Radiosurgery Benefits Brain Cancer Patients

A study from Wake Forest University, published in JAMA Oncology highlights improved outcomes for patients with metastatic brain tumors who treated with preoperative surgery and stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS). The study saw improvements in rates of tumor recurrence, adverse radiation effects and spread of tumor cells to the fluid outside of the brain, also known as meningeal disease.

Penile HIV infection is Effectively Prevented by Antiretroviral Treatment, Study Says

Using a mouse model, researchers at the UNC School of Medicine developed a new approach for the detailed evaluation of HIV infection within the penis. The study addressed three issues of HIV transmission: How is HIV acquired via the penis; where is HIV produced in the MGT; and can penile HIV acquisition be prevented? A novel in vivo model provided a first-time analysis of HIV infection throughout the entire male genital tract. Using this mouse model, the team showed that productive HIV infection occurs in all the organs that comprise the male genital tract, resulting in a dramatic reduction in human CD4 T cells, key components of the immune system present in these organs.
