This article is part of our Buzzin’ Brood Student Spotlight series, one of our ongoing People & Places Features. We are thrilled to spotlight the next generation of industry. Be sure to FOLLOW us on LinkedIn to tell us what you think and let us know if you have a student or intern you’d like us to feature.

How did you get here?

My name is Aaron Sturtevant. I’m a Mechanical Engineering major at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology. In high school, I was always more drawn to mathematical and scientific academic pursuits. In my mind, going into engineering was the best way to combine those two interests.

Studying mechanical engineering, I’m faced with countless possibilities for my future career. I could potentially find work in almost any field of industry in the world. As I continue my studies, my goal is to keep an open mind and try to gain experience in industries I find interesting. This mindset led me to a biotechnical-based summer internship with Kymanox.

What is currently blowing your mind right now?

The coolest thing I’m seeing now is the precision that’s needed in almost every area of this industry. A prime example that I’m currently working with is hypodermic needles. We’ve all encountered them, and yet, I can say that I personally never put much thought into how complicated the beveled tips can get. The idea that a metal tube as thin as (or thinner than) half a millimeter could be ground five separate times at five different precise angles just to produce a sharp point is fascinating to me. This level of precision and quality extends to so many of the projects I see around me this summer.

If you could explain yourself right now in only emojis, what would those be?

If you could travel into the future… what does your LinkedIn Headline say?

Product Development Engineer

Currently, I am enjoying exploring different industry opportunities. Previously, I worked in manufacturing engineering and aerodynamics. While I deeply value all of these experiences, I have discovered a strong preference for the biotechnical industry. Here at Kymanox, it seems like something new, precise, and often cutting-edge is always being done, which I find very exciting.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be?

If I could have any superpower, I think I would have to go for superspeed. I wouldn’t have to worry about running out of time to do all the things I want or need to do in a day. Traffic would no longer be an issue, unless I wanted to experience it for some reason. I could also read books incredibly fast, gaining knowledge at a quick rate. The possibilities of what I could achieve with superspeed seem limitless.
