1. What did you want to be when you grow up? How’d you get from there to here?
When I was younger, I wanted to be a paleontologist due to my fascination with dinosaurs, sparked by watching movies like Jurassic Park. However, as I grew older, the idea of digging in the dirt lost its appeal, and being from a family of seamstresses, I shifted my interest towards fashion design. I enjoyed putting clothes together and experimenting with different materials, even delving into clothing creation. As I pursued fashion design, I also developed a liking for modeling and admired how people put outfits together with various materials. However, my journey didn’t stop there. It soon became apparent that marketing was a natural extension of my interests, as it allowed me to not only create products but also showcase and promote them effectively to a wider audience.
In the field of marketing, I found a sense of purpose in helping companies showcase their products in the best possible way. It became a way for me to contribute positively to society by aiding companies that work on products like vaccines, pills, and injections, which have the potential to make a significant difference in people’s lives, especially those who are sick and in need. Combining my early interest in science, my creative flair in fashion design, and my passion for marketing, I have found a fulfilling path that allows me to contribute to the world positively. It’s incredible how our passions and interests can evolve over time, leading us to unexpected and rewarding careers.
2. How are you helping to build a more connected community?
BioBuzz’s mission is simple: to be more connected. Our regionally-focused storytelling, programs, events and experiences create, connect and amplify impact across the life science workforce in growing biohubs. We vibe with people who value community and connection like us. We’d love for you to share how you’re building a more connected community… and any support that you need from our community to continue to accomplish this mission.
I feel like I am helping to build a more connected community because I connect people through networking events, conversations, and speaker events. At these events, people showcase how they started their journeys and how they transitioned into their current positions. Often, many people don’t realize that even though we wear different paths, we share a lot of common interests and goals.
My current passion is working with students because they aren’t always exposed to certain careers. When I visit schools, I can show them the various career options available, not just the obvious ones, but also the less-known ones. For example, in the field of engineering, there are many different paths to explore. To achieve this, we have a mentoring program where we teach kids how to build a lemonade manufacturing facility. Through this program, they acquire skills in mechanical engineering and architecture. We also teach them how to test and market their products to those who enjoy this summer beverage. It’s essential to introduce these opportunities to kids so that they can make informed choices about their future careers.
3. What are currently buzzing about? Anything and everything…
Currently, I am buzzing about a company that is making groundbreaking progress in helping people with Type 1 diabetes. Their innovative technology involves implanting a patch of cells that acts as a pancreas, producing insulin. This advancement offers hope to many who suffer from Type 1 diabetes, eliminating the need for daily insulin injections and blood sugar monitoring. The impact of this development is immense, as it allows Type 1 diabetics to live life to the fullest without restrictions on activities and foods, which are often dictated by their body’s reactions. It’s truly exciting to witness companies working to help people overcome this disease.
Moreover, the joyous feeling comes from observing people come together and dedicate themselves to producing meaningful change. At our company, we collaborate with others striving for positive impact. We work on creating affordable, sustainable facilities that exist harmoniously with the environment. Working at a company with constant evolution and change is inspiring to me, as I am a lifelong learner. This environment motivates me to do more and become a better person, knowing that together, when people unite, positive transformations happen for the better.
4. If you could travel back in time – what early career advice would you give yourself?
OR What career advice would you shout from the rooftops now?
If I could travel back in time, I would share some valuable career advice with my younger self. I would say, “It’s okay to ask more questions and overcome shyness. You don’t always have to know the answers, as there are people who can guide you along the way. Find the path that truly resonates with you and your aspirations. Remember, you are not alone in your journey. Make friends, learn new things, and grow as a person. Once you reach your destination, you may encounter others who need the same support you once sought. Embrace the opportunity to pay it forward and help others as others have helped you.
Above all, be brave. Embrace new challenges, step out of your comfort zone, and don’t let fear hold you back. Life is a journey of constant learning and evolution, and being brave will open doors to new possibilities and personal growth.”
5. What’s one thing people don’t know about you?
I lift heavy weights. I was inspired by my favorite action movie star, Arnold Schwarzenegger, who began as a bodybuilder. I’ve always admired bodybuilders for their physique, passion, and energy. I’ve always thought about participating in an Iron Man competition. I’m excited that I’m currently squatting 300 pounds. My fitness journey started with the desire to be healthy, but as I progressed, I challenged myself to lift more weight. It’s motivating to see myself grow stronger and push my limits. In the gym, I’ve caught the attention of some of the bigger lifters, and it’s gratifying to know that my dedication and progress are being noticed.
Overall, weightlifting is a fulfilling and energizing activity for me, and I find great joy in pushing myself to new heights and embracing the bodybuilding lifestyle.
