Portal Innovations has officially opened the New Jersey Innovation Hub (NJIH) inside the HELIX district in New Brunswick, launching with 16 founding member companies already on board — the largest pre-launch cohort in Portal’s national network of innovation hubs.
Occupying nearly 30,000 square feet within HELIX’s first completed building, H-1, the hub combines state-of-the-art wet and dry lab space with offices, conference rooms, shared collaboration areas, and more than $2 million in modern lab equipment, giving early-stage biotech, healthcare, life sciences, and technology companies a home to grow without the upfront cost of building out their own labs.
The hub is the product of a broad public-private partnership spanning the State of New Jersey, Rutgers University, the New Jersey Economic Development Authority, RWJBarnabas Health, Hackensack Meridian Health, Johnson & Johnson, the New Brunswick Development Corporation (DEVCO), BioNJ, and the wider HELIX ecosystem. Sangeetha Ramsagar serves as Executive Director, overseeing day-to-day strategy, operations, and ecosystem-building for the site. Many of the founding member companies grew out of research conducted at New Jersey universities, including Rutgers, Princeton, and the New Jersey Institute of Technology, while others — including PharmaMedic and Materium Technologies — were drawn in from outside the state through Middlesex County’s international marketing outreach.
Beyond providing physical lab and office space, NJIH gives members access to Portal’s national network of founders, pharmaceutical partners, and research institutions, along with mentorship and founder-focused programming designed to help science-driven startups raise capital and scale. State and local officials have framed the launch as a milestone not just for HELIX, but for New Jersey’s broader push to reestablish itself as a leading hub for life sciences innovation, alongside the district’s other anchor tenants, including Rutgers’ Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and the future home of Nokia Bell Labs.
The 16 Founding Member Companies
TangGene is developing tissue-specific CD8 regulatory T cell therapies aimed at autoimmune diseases. Built around a proprietary nanoparticle platform, the company’s pipeline targets disease-modifying treatments for conditions such as multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis, areas where existing therapies often manage symptoms rather than alter the underlying course of disease.
Guidant Therapeutics is working on next-generation immune therapies for cancer. The company’s approach is focused on improving the precision of these treatments while reducing the systemic toxicity that can accompany many existing immuno-oncology therapies.
DrRx.ai has built an AI-powered platform that gives health systems real-time, FHIR-based visibility into patients’ medications as they move across different points of care. By closing gaps in medication data during care transitions, the platform is designed to help reduce avoidable hospital readmissions.
Favorite Pharma is focused on advancing precision medicine in oncology, with particular attention to pancreatic and colorectal cancers — two disease areas where treatment options remain limited and outcomes have historically lagged behind other cancer types.
Larada Therapeutics is developing novel treatments for rare ocular diseases that currently have no approved therapies. Co-founder and Chief Scientist Scott Kachlany has pointed to the value of joining an ecosystem that pairs lab infrastructure with industry relationships as the company works to advance its pipeline.
PumpKin Baby has created a natural preservative device for breastmilk that also assesses the nutritional quality of frozen human milk, addressing a practical need for parents who pump and store milk for later use.
PharmaMedic, LLC provides pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies with medical, regulatory, and product development consulting services. The firm was one of two founding members recruited from outside the country through Middlesex County’s international outreach efforts.
Sampled helps organizations unlock the value of biological samples and associated data, with the goal of accelerating both broader research efforts and precision medicine initiatives that depend on high-quality sample management.
Thrive Genetics applies genomics and technology to improve addiction care, using earlier risk detection to help clinicians build more personalized treatment strategies for patients.
Ubuntu Research supplies clinical strategy, trial design, and operational support to early and clinical-stage biotech companies, helping smaller organizations navigate the complexities of clinical development.
PFA Solve delivers detection, capture, and destruction technology for PFAS — the “forever chemicals” drawing increasing regulatory and public health scrutiny — with an emphasis on speed, reliability, and safety.
Materium Technologies develops sustainable, high-performance nanocomposite films using machine learning and materials science. Based in California, it was recruited to New Jersey through Middlesex County’s international and out-of-state marketing program.
Scarlet TCR is advancing a genetically engineered T cell therapy designed to force stable expression of a receptor that targets human papillomavirus (HPV), an approach aimed at treating HPV-driven disease more directly than existing options.
LeagueMed, LLC operates a digital, multi-media investment platform that connects healthcare professionals with private MedTech and health IT investment opportunities, opening up early-stage healthcare investing to a wider pool of participants.
Phase 1 Solutions gives sponsors hands-on drug development support across early-phase trials, with a focus on urgent and rescue scenarios as well as first-in-human Phase 1 through Phase 1b program delivery.
BioNJ, the state’s life sciences trade association, rounds out the founding cohort. In addition to being a founding member, BioNJ has opened a satellite office at the hub, giving its broader membership base a physical presence inside HELIX to connect with startups, researchers, and other companies across the ecosystem.
