While traditional degrees can be a pathway to success, the state also provides numerous non-degree programs tailored to equip residents with the skills needed to excel in life sciences manufacturing and other related sectors. From apprenticeships and certification courses to specialized training initiatives, these programs are designed to meet the growing demand for skilled professionals in North Carolina’s life sciences industry. Whether you’re a recent high school graduate, a career changer, or someone looking to enhance your current skills, these resources offer accessible and practical routes to rewarding careers without the need for a traditional degree.

Life Sciences Manufacturing Ambassador Program 

The Life Sciences Manufacturing Ambassador Program, launched in early 2023, connects North Carolinians across 79 counties, increasing awareness of opportunities in the sector. The program offers avenues to connect with community members, learn about training opportunities, job openings, and life sciences events, and join the Accelerate NC Platform.

NC Life Sciences Apprenticeship Consortium 

The NC Life Sciences Apprenticeship Consortium partners with industry members and community colleges to enhance access to life sciences manufacturing training and apprenticeships. The program funds 296 North Carolinians to take the BioWork certificate program, leading to apprenticeships and career opportunities at top life sciences companies.

Manufacturing Prep Program – NCGrads2Work 

NCGrads2Work allows 126 high school seniors in Pitt and surrounding counties to complete a free, two-day pharmaceutical manufacturing training program. Participants receive tutoring for the National Career Readiness Certificate and are guaranteed an interview with leading life sciences employers upon completion.

BULLS Life Sciences Academy 

The BULLS Life Sciences Academy, by Made in Durham, expands access to life sciences manufacturing opportunities for underserved populations in Durham County. Participants receive up to a $10,000 life stipend, support services, and access to the BioWork training program at Durham Technical Community College.

Wake Forests BioWork Process Technician 

BioWork is a 136-hour certificate course leading to an entry-level position as a process technician. This program offers course credit toward an associate degree in Biotechnology or Biopharmaceutical Technology, intended for high school graduates or those pursuing a biopharmaceutical career.

Accelerate NC Life Sciences Manufacturing Training 

As part of the NC Biotech-funded Accelerate NC initiative, UNC Pembroke hosts two-week biomanufacturing training sessions. These sessions, offered at no cost, teach essential skills for biomanufacturing careers, and priority is given to NC residents.

Amgen’s Biotech Experience equips educators with biotechnology lessons, lab activities, and virtual tools to inspire the next generation of biotech professionals. It also offers professional development and curriculum materials.

Biogen Community Lab 

Biogen’s Community Lab engages middle and high school students in hands-on biotechnology experiments, providing opportunities to meet scientists and explore career paths in life sciences.

BRITE Futures 

Located at North Carolina Central University, BRITE Futures offers interactive STEM projects, lab tours, and hands-on activities, aimed at spreading awareness of life sciences opportunities among students.

NCBioNetwork STEM Outreach 

NCBioNetwork provides classroom activities, workshops, and special events to help students explore occupations in life sciences, supporting informed career decisions.
