Materic and LaunchPort Announce Partnership to Drive Advanced Materials Manufacturing for Medical Device Technology

Materic’s expertise in advanced materials and 3D printing to combine with The LaunchPort’s skills in GMP production of medical devices and technologies

July 18, 2022, Baltimore, MD – Materic, a custom manufacturer of advanced materials, and LaunchPort, LLC, a medical device venture center and GMP contract manufacturing operation today announced a partnership to drive the use of advanced materials in the development of emerging medical device technologies.

Under this new partnership, the two companies aim to combine their respective areas of expertise – Materic in advanced materials processing and The LaunchPort in the GMP production of medical devices and personalized medicine technologies – to accelerate medical device application development across an array of products.

“GMP production doesn’t just require specialized facilities but also people with specialized skills. LaunchPort is a leader in both,” said Ken Malone, Chief Executive Officer with Materic. “We receive a lot of requests from our customers to provide materials made under GMP and this partnership with LaunchPort will allow us to meet their needs efficiently.”

“Over the past decade, the expectations for additive manufacturing in medical devices have been growing steadily. The success of Invisalign braces woke everyone up to the opportunity, and the space is projected to expand over the next five years in excess of 15% per year.  The explosion in patient-specific solutions across multiple clinical areas is exciting, to say the least,” said Bob Storey, Managing Partner with The LaunchPort. “Materic has established themselves as leaders in the custom manufacturing of advanced materials that will be needed to explore these new opportunities.  Ken and I have shared the opinion for some time that this is a sector that is well suited to Baltimore’s unique history in manufacturing and leadership in clinical innovation.”

In a move to begin their collaboration work, Materic’s portfolio company Danae will place 3D printing equipment in The LaunchPort’s City Garage facility at Port Covington in Baltimore to support growing demand from their clients for 3D printed medical devices. Materic also will provide expertise regarding component design, especially as it relates to specialty materials selection and production, nanofiber fabrication and various 3D printing techniques.

The LaunchPort will work to support development of GMP processes, assisting with the development of process Failure Mode & Effects Analyses, and establishing compliance documentation to support clients that may seek eventual regulatory approval. The LaunchPort also will manage production operations.

On the heels of this new collaboration, both companies recently announced significant expansion plans.  Materic, which continues to operate out of the 1100 Wicomico Building is expanding its industrial custom materials manufacturing to 1300 Bayard Street. Both facilities are in the Pig Town neighborhood of Baltimore.

The LaunchPort last year acquired the manufacturing operation of Engineered Medical Systems – Baltimore, and is in the midst of expanding its manufacturing/clean room areas as well as opening additional space in its venture center for emerging growth medical device companies.
