Medifast®, the Baltimore-based health and wellness company, announced on August 27, 2026 the launch of the Medifast Metabolic Health Institute, a centralized hub meant to consolidate the company’s clinical research and educational resources on metabolic health under a single organization. CEO Nick Johnson framed the launch as an effort to translate decades of internal research into something the public can actually use: “Metabolic dysfunction is one of the defining health challenges of our generation, and most people still do not know what metabolic health means or how to improve it. We have spent 45 years building our expertise, and the institute brings that work together in one place. Turning that science into education people can act on is how we earn the right to be a trusted authority in metabolic health.” Dr. Satya Jonnalagadda, Medifast’s Vice President of Scientific & Clinical Affairs, described the institute as a bridge between research and everyday use: “For decades, Medifast has invested in clinical research and scientific excellence. The Medifast Metabolic Health Institute builds on that foundation by creating a centralized hub for credible, evidence-based research and educational resources. As the understanding of metabolic health continues to evolve, we are committed to helping bridge the gap between scientific discovery and practical application, empowering people with the knowledge needed to support meaningful health transformation.”
What the Institute Actually Consolidates
Medifast says the new institute draws on more than 100 peer-reviewed presentations and publications, over 40 peer-reviewed journal articles, 18 randomized controlled trials, and more than 30 additional scientific studies and analyses the company has produced over the years. It will be guided by the company’s Scientific Advisory Board, established in 2008 and made up of outside experts, along with Dr. Wayne Scott Andersen serving as MMHI Distinguished Fellow. Andersen isn’t a new face at the company; he co-founded Take Shape for Life, the coaching division that became the backbone of what was later branded OPTAVIA, giving the institute a governance figure with roots in the company going back to its earliest coaching model. Day-to-day, the institute will run through Medifast’s existing Scientific & Clinical Affairs team of registered dietitians, scientists, and health educators alongside its Research and Development group, and it will also set the certification standards coaches must complete annually under the company’s coach-support program.
Part of a Bigger Rebrand That Just Happened Weeks Earlier
This launch doesn’t stand on its own. Medifast rebranded its consumer-facing OPTAVIA brand as Trilivy in July 2026, repositioning the company’s identity from weight loss specifically toward broader metabolic health, built around a three-phase Reset-Refine-Renew structure and a “Metabolic Synchronization” framework aimed at reducing visceral fat while preserving lean muscle mass. CEO Johnson described that rebrand at the time as reflecting “where we’re headed: a modern metabolic health company built for today’s world and tomorrow’s opportunities.” The Metabolic Health Institute effectively supplies the scientific and educational infrastructure behind that consumer-facing pivot, giving Trilivy’s metabolic health positioning something to point back to beyond marketing language.
