Earlier this week, BioBuzz hosted its first-ever Career Catalyst event featuring Ali Divan, a PhD researcher turned biotech entrepreneur, alongside BioBuzz Ambassador Tara Little. The event focused on guiding attendees through the often daunting transition from academia to the biotech industry—a shift that many aspiring professionals encounter. Attendees came from a wide range of backgrounds, including students, postdocs, and those looking to refine their job search or pivot into new sectors. Divan provided invaluable insights into navigating the biotech landscape and identifying a path to success beyond academia.

Ali Divan’s Journey and Advice

Divan began by sharing his personal journey. After earning his PhD in Medical Science from Texas A&M, with a focus on immunology, he pursued postdoctoral research in microbiology and medicinal chemistry. However, he soon realized academia wasn’t the right fit for him and made the leap into biotech in San Diego. His experiences at companies like BioLegend and Truvian, along with his involvement in startups within genomics and spatial biology, provided him with a deep understanding of various industry sectors. Later, his consulting work and launch of his own business further expanded his expertise.

During his presentation, Divan drew upon both his personal and professional experiences to outline the life science industry. He highlighted the key distinctions between academia and industry, noting that while academia offers creative freedom, it often comes with the pressures of securing funding and focusing on niche research. In contrast, biotech prioritizes teamwork, efficiency, and product-driven goals, making collaboration and business-oriented thinking crucial. He provided insights into the different career opportunities available in biotech, pharma, medical devices, and health tech, while also outlining common entry points for graduates, such as roles in R&D, operations, quality assurance, and marketing. For those unsure about whether to join a startup or a larger company, Divan noted that startups often offer more dynamic, multifaceted roles, whereas larger companies provide more structured positions, albeit with bureaucratic challenges.

In addition to career advice, Divan emphasized the importance of self-assessment, urging attendees to embrace failure as a learning tool. He stressed that networking and mentorship are vital for building a successful career in biotech. Ultimately, adaptability, a commitment to learning, and a blend of technical and business skills are essential for thriving in this fast-evolving industry.
