The BioHealth Capital Region is rethinking how science moves from discovery to impact. This week, that shift is showing up at nearly every stage. One company has secured $8.3 million in NIAID and FDA contracts to develop research models, while $3 million in federal funding is launching a Baltimore hub dedicated to advancing non-animal drug development tools. Together, those investments point to a growing push for better ways to study disease and evaluate potential therapies before they reach patients.
Further down the pipeline, that progress is already taking shape. IGC Pharma completed enrollment of 168 patients in its Phase 2 CALMA Alzheimer’s trial ahead of a Q4 readout, while QIAGEN expanded its QIAstat-Dx portfolio with an FDA-cleared panel capable of identifying gram-negative bloodstream infections and antibiotic resistance markers in about an hour.
The evolution isn’t stopping at R&D. HHS and EPA are bringing six federal agencies together to strengthen the science behind glyphosate review, while Kymanox is questioning whether continuous manufacturing could eventually challenge the massive stainless-steel bioreactors that have long defined biologics production. From how therapies are studied and tested to how they’re regulated and manufactured, this week’s news shows an ecosystem reconsidering what the next generation of life sciences should look like.
