Two weeks ago, Greater Philadelphia was hedging its bets and waiting for proof before committing. This week, the commitments came first. Across the send, pharma partners, federal funders and the region’s own talent builders made real commitments before the point where it usually feels safe to: before a first patient, before first symptoms, before a launch, and a full year before the interns show up.
The biggest checks went to the earliest science. Merck agreed to pay up to $2.13 billion, $400 million of it upfront, for a KRAS inhibitor that hasn’t been tested in a single patient. Genentech signed a deal worth more than $1.5 billion with Earendil Labs to discover bispecific antibodies that don’t exist yet. Penn and the University of Miami landed $26 million from the NIH to catch ALS and FTD before symptoms ever appear, laying the groundwork for prevention trials that could act before irreversible damage sets in.
The people side is moving early too. Larimar brought on John Harlow, who has built commercial teams from scratch before, as President and COO ahead of a potential launch for its Friedreich’s ataxia therapy. Life Science Cares Philadelphia is already asking companies to pledge paid 2027 internships through “Fill the Map,” so a student’s shot at the industry doesn’t depend on a 90-minute commute.
Minaris is getting ahead of the in vivo gene therapy market by carving out a dedicated Viral Vectors unit, and it’s hiring for 90+ roles across the region right now.

Why Big Pharma Is Paying Big for Antibodies That Hit Cancer From Two Sides
Earendil Labs has landed a deal worth more than $1.5 billion with Genentech to hunt down a new generation of cancer antibodies, molecules designed to hit tumors from two angles at once instead of one. It’s the AI-driven biotech’s second major pharma partnership this year, following deals with Sanofi that already put its platform on the map. Here’s what makes bispecific antibodies different, and why Big Pharma keeps coming back. Read More >
What If ALS and FTD Could Be Stopped Before They Begin?
Penn and the University of Miami have landed $26 million from the NIH to chase something that’s eluded ALS and FTD treatment for years: a way to spot the disease before symptoms ever appear. The five-year study targets a specific genetic variant behind both conditions, building toward prevention trials that could intervene before irreversible damage sets in. Here’s what the funding is actually going toward. Read More >
DARPA Just Bet $11 Million on Treating Depression in a Single Day
NRx Pharmaceuticals has landed a major DARPA contract to test whether a single-day treatment, combining robotic brain stimulation with its depression drug, can outperform the weeks-long regimens used today. Early data already points to a striking response rate, one that could reshape treatment for people who can’t wait weeks for relief. Here’s how the approach actually works. Read More >
