This week in the BioHealth Capital Region, money is moving, science is advancing, and companies are figuring out what comes next. Across the region, new funding is giving biotech companies more room to grow, clinical programs are reaching important milestones, and partnerships are helping move new technologies closer to patients.
Georgiamune led the week with a nearly $93 million Series B, while Navion Neurosciences raised $10.8 million to advance precision medicines for epilepsy and neuropathic pain. On the clinical side, Autolus earned FDA RMAT designation for obe-cel in lupus, Remedy Plan moved its cancer metabolism program further into Phase 1, and Senseonics partnered with Beta Bionics to connect its year-long glucose monitor with automated insulin delivery.
But growth doesn’t always look the same. Emergent BioSolutions is cutting 90 Maryland jobs as part of a larger restructuring, while biotech leaders across Maryland are looking at how stronger manufacturing, supply chains, and support for early-stage companies can help the region grow long term. Navion Neurosciences Closes $10.8 Million Seed Financing to Advance Precision Sodium-Channel Medicines for Epilepsy and Neuropathic Pain
Charlottesville-based Navion Neurosciences closed a $10.8 million seed round to advance AI-enabled precision therapeutics targeting sodium channels. The financing will support programs for genetic epilepsies and chronic neuropathic pain. Read More >
TEDCO Supports Sirius Biotech Ventures Through Concept Capital Program
TEDCO invested $25,000 in Frederick-based Sirius Biotech Ventures through its Concept Capital Program to advance the company’s cancer drug discovery platform. The funding will support Sirius’ work identifying new therapeutic combinations aimed at overcoming resistance to KRAS-targeted cancer treatments and moving its technology closer to commercialization. $2.5M NIH grant to measure effect of wildfire smoke and extreme heat on pregnancy
University of Maryland School of Public Health researchers received a $2.5 million NIH grant to study how exposure to wildfire smoke and extreme heat can affect pregnancy outcomes. The research will examine risks including preterm birth and low birthweight, helping researchers better understand the growing impact of climate-related exposures on maternal and infant health.
