The BioHealth Capital Region is seeing a new wave of investment, but the bigger story is what that investment is making possible. This week, Kaléo secured a $96.1 million BARDA contract to advance a treatment for chemical threat exposure, while SereNeuro Therapeutics closed an oversubscribed pre-seed round to develop non-opioid pain therapies. Meanwhile, Seraxis and Sernova finalized $11.2 million in financing to move their proposed merger and stem cell-derived diabetes therapy forward. Across the region, capital is flowing toward some of healthcare’s most complex challenges.
But funding is only part of the story. BullFrog AI is making progress in a drug discovery collaboration aimed at identifying overlooked targets for depression, while 60 Degrees Pharmaceuticals is preparing for a critical clinical readout and FDA discussions around its severe babesiosis program. These developments highlight the different paths companies are taking to turn promising science into treatments that could reach patients.
And the momentum extends beyond individual companies. BioHub Maryland’s new partnership with BioBuzz’s BioCatalyst program is expanding pathways into biomanufacturing careers, while Virginia’s nationally recognized workforce training efforts are supporting major life sciences investments. At the same time, the region’s companies are hiring across research, manufacturing, and clinical operations. From securing capital and advancing therapies to building the workforce needed to deliver them, this week’s developments show how the region is laying the groundwork for its next phase of growth.
