This week, companies are securing the resources to push promising technologies closer to market. Rockville’s biotech cluster is advancing multiple programs through critical clinical and commercial milestones, with the region’s leaders gaining recognition for the work shaping its future.
Gaithersburg’s Elutia secured up to $26 million to take NXT-41X through FDA clearance and launch, alongside proceeds from its SimpliDerm sale. Meanwhile, UMD landed $17.3 million to build an autonomous biomanufacturing lab—fueling both products and the infrastructure behind them.
In Rockville, the momentum is showing up across the clinical and commercial pipeline, with OncoC4 dosing the first patient in a Phase 1 trial, MaxCyte launching new base-editing safety assays, and AbelZeta regaining rights to its CAR-T therapy before securing FDA clearance to begin U.S. trials.

Gaithersburg’s Elutia Secures $26 Million to Fund NXT-41x Through Commercial Launch
Elutia has secured up to $26 million in non-dilutive funding, a $15 million Avenue Capital credit facility, up to $11 million from its now-completed SimpliDerm® sale to Cellution Biologics, and $8 million from a BioEnvelope escrow, to carry NXT-41x, its antibiotic-eluting biomatrix for plastic and reconstructive surgery, through FDA clearance and into commercial launch without issuing new equity. The company expects clearance in the first half of 2027 and a commercial soft launch in the second half of that year, targeting a roughly $1.5 billion market where post-operative infection rates run 15% to 20%. ATCC Wins $7.3 Million CDC Award to Strengthen Influenza Testing and Surveillance
ATCC has won a five-year, $7.3 million CDC contract to help develop next-generation serology platforms tracking how influenza viruses evolve. Kolon TissueGene Cuts 37 US Staffers After Phase 3 Trial Failure
Cell and gene therapy biotech Kolon TissueGene is laying off 37 employees at its Rockville, Maryland site following a Phase 3 miss for TG-C, its knee osteoarthritis cell therapy, which failed to meet co-primary endpoints in the ACTiVION-II trial. CEO Seng Ho Jeon called the result a “great disappointment and concern” in a video statement, taking accountability by committing to review all available data from the ground up and share both final results and progress along the way. AbelZeta Reclaims Its CAR-T Lymphoma Drug From Janssen, Then Immediately Wins FDA Clearance to Test It
AbelZeta Pharma has regained full global rights to C-CAR039, its bispecific CAR-T lymphoma therapy, from Janssen Biotech after a three-year licensing deal, and won FDA clearance the following month to begin U.S. trials. The FDA has cleared Aletta, a fully autonomous blood draw robot from Dutch company Vitestro, through its De Novo pathway to address a growing U.S. phlebotomist shortage, with one supervising phlebotomist able to oversee up to three devices at once.
