Top Biotech Companies Hiring in Maryland: Summer 2022 Edition

Despite the U.S. biotech sector’s recent stock market downturn and a spate of layoffs, multiple BioHealth Capital Region (BHCR) companies are bucking this bear market with strong growth and active hiring plans.

ATCC, Gaithersburg, Maryland and Manassas, Virginia

American Type Culture Collection, best known as ATCC, is a global biological resource center that has supported life sciences research for nearly 100 years. It’s fair to say that just about anybody that has worked in a research lab has used their products at some point over their career. 

ATCC has continued to innovate across the organization and has expanded their products and services to meet the evolving needs of researchers driven by the advancements of new technologies.  Late last year ATCC won a $545M NIAID contract to support the Clinical Research Division of Intramural Research and Vaccine Research Center with rapid response capabilities to infectious disease issues. Just this year they were also awarded three grants valued at over $5.5 million by the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA).

ATCC is actively hiring for around 50 positions at its Gaithersburg facility and Manassas HQ driven by Company growth, the new & expanding government contracts, and their COVID-related work. They are hiring across a wide range of fields and experience levels including R&D, Government Contracts, Supply Chain/Manufacturing, with a few corporate jobs in Finance, IT, HR. GSK, Rockville, Maryland and Other Global Locations

GSK (NYSE: GSK) is one of the most successful biopharma companies in the world with locations around the globe and a deep, varied pipeline of potential drug candidates. GSK recently split off the consumer side of its business, launching a spin-off company named Haleon, which is now the largest standalone consumer health business in the world. 

The company employs approximately 15,000 employees in the U.S. and is focused on developing and commercializing innovative vaccines and specialty medicines to prevent and treat disease. GSK’s R&D focuses on the science of the immune system, human genetics, and advanced technologies in four therapeutic areas: infectious diseases, HIV, oncology, and immunology.

ABL, Rockville, Maryland

Catalent, Baltimore, Harmans and Gaithersburg, Maryland, plus Global Locations

Catalent (NYSE: CTLT) is a global organization that provides comprehensive suite solutions to support the entire lifecycle of the biopharma industry. Catalent purchased the well-regarded BioHealth Capital Region (BHCR) company Paragon Bioservices in 2019 for $1.2B and has continued to grow its Maryland footprint in the years since.

The University of Maryland (UMD) BioPark facility in Baltimore specializes in upstream and downstream process development of viral vectors for clinical applications. Catalent also has a 50,000 square foot gene therapy facility in Rockville that was purchased from Novavax in 2019. In addition, the organization has a 200,000 square foot, FDA-licensed, state-of-the-art cGMP manufacturing facility for gene therapies at its Harmans/BWI campus.

Kite Pharma, a Gilead Company, Frederick, Maryland and Global Locations

Kite Pharma (NASDAQ: KITE) is a global leader in cell therapy treatments for cancer with offices around the world. 

The company recently received FDA approval for its state-of-the art CAR T-cell manufacturing facility located in Frederick County, Maryland. As the cell therapy leader, Kite has more FDA-approved CAR T-cell indications than any other company.

Miltenyi Biotec, Gaithersburg, Maryland and Multiple Global Locations

The Germany-based company recently made that goal more attainable by moving its North American headquarters to Gaithersburg and opening a new 5,000-square-foot building in the Maryland location. The expansion of its Clopper Road facility will translate into a substantial increase in hiring for roles in manufacturing, quality assurance (QA), quality control (QC), and research and development (R&D).

With the goal to fill 14 manufacturing positions by September and the rest of the 50+ open roles across divisions at the Gaithersburg site by the end of 2022—Miltenyi Biotec expects its Maryland employee tally to total 400 by 2023.

The potential for extensive growth at this site is more advanced than traditional environments, given the opportunity for seamless travel and communication cultivated between the multiple U.S. and European Miltenyi Biotec locations. And considering the company just brought four drug substance areas online and expects to release two more this year, building a sustainable manufacturing team is crucial. REGENXBIO, Rockville, Maryland

As a result of this expansion, REGENXBIO has been hiring at a rapid pace over the past few years and 2022 has continued this hiring trend.

Emergent BioSolutions, Gaithersburg and Baltimore, Maryland, Multiple Global Locations

In 2021, BD entered into a contract with the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) worth $24.7M (with options to extend the contract value to $40.3M) to develop a range of COVID-19 combination diagnostic tests to be deployed at labs, hospitals and point-of-care facilities.
