The Maryland Tech Council, the largest technology and life science trade association in the state, announced the winners of its 2022 Industry Awards Thursday at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel & Conference Center. The event, which honored companies, executives, students, and educators in 15 categories, marked the first in-person gathering for the Industry Awards Celebration since 2019.

Three of this year’s awards went to life science companies or executives, including:

  • CEO of the Year – Life Sciences: Kenneth Mills, President & CEO, REGENXBIO
  • Emerging Life Sciences Company of the Year: Cartesian Therapeutics
  • Life Sciences Company of the Year: BD

We had a chance to catch up with Cartesian Therapeutics CEO, Murat Kalayoglu who had led his company through an impressive year that has seen several advancements in their clinical programs.  The company has four assets in the clinic, including the First RNA Cell Therapy in an Autoimmune Disease (Ph2), the First RNA Cell Therapy in a Frontline Cancer (Ph2), the First Engineered Cell Therapy in Respiratory Disease (Ph2), and the First Engineered MSC Therapy in heme/onc (Ph1).

“We are honored to be recognized by the Maryland Technology Council as the Emerging Life Sciences Company of the Year.  Our Cartesian colleagues have worked tirelessly to bring multiple RNA cell therapies into clinical trials across four indications to date,” shared Kalayoglu. “I think the reason we have been successful in translating preclinical discoveries into clinical studies quickly is because we have a dedicated, committed group of physicians and scientists operating within a fully integrated setting, where we do discovery, regulatory, cGMP manufacturing, QA/QC, and clinical operations all under the same roof.  I think this integrated approach will enable us to quickly move promising assets into later-stage clinical studies as well.”

“We are thrilled to honor the most dynamic and exciting tech and life science companies, leaders and students of the past year,” said Marty Rosendale, CEO of the Maryland Tech Council. “Each winner set the standard for innovation, leadership, education and impact in their organization, community or classroom. I congratulate all winners and finalists for inspiring excellence across Maryland’s innovation and education landscapes.”
