Located in the northern part of Maryland along the I-270 Technology Corridor, Frederick County is home to more than 80 bioscience companies. With proximity to Fort Detrick, home to the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research, the county boasts a powerful environment of life sciences intellectual prowess.
This year, Maryland continued to prove why it’s becoming one of the strongest biohealth clusters in the country. The state’s commitment to businesses in the life science, pharmaceutical, and biotech industries has continued as both the private and public sectors work to meet the demand for more space. Here are a few of the biggest real estate projects in Maryland in 2021. Some of these projects are still under construction, while others were unveiled this year.
Home to an array of renowned universities, federal labs, and government resources, it’s no surprise that the globally renowned Milken Institute found that Maryland “has one of the nation’s strongest life sciences industries,” according to its recent report.
It’s clear that Maryland’s efforts to grow its recognition as a life sciences/biotech hub have paid off. However, there is still more work to be done in order for Maryland’s R&D growth trajectory to keep up with other leading hubs such as Massachusetts and North Carolina.
Biotech company VaLogic has acquired a 75,400-square-foot building in Frederick to create a suburban tech center near Interstate 270.
The company bought a vacant commercial building at 7495 New Horizon Way for $7.7 million and soon will begin to gut and redo the interior to create the new office and lab space to lease to several smaller companies.
VaLogic for years has consulted on engineering and compliance issues for life science and bioscience companies. It is one of dozens of existing bioscience companies in the county, which is considered a suburb of both Baltimore and Washington, D.C. because of its location off Interstates 70 and 270.

Maryland’s reputation as the destination state for biotech jobs and life science research continues to climb as new startups emerge across its biohealth cluster regions.
For three years VaLogic LLC and the Frederick Community College Biotechnology Program have worked hand-in-hand to build a partnership, including a new biotech apprenticeship program, that provides a pathway for students to gain employment in the fast-growing life sciences ecosystem in Maryland.
The combination of a booming biotech market with an additional surge of hiring by vaccine and diagnostic companies in Maryland has resulted in record-low unemployment and competition for talent at an all-time high.
